Mountain Lion Captured, Released in Southeast Missouri (ContributorNetwork)

Mountain lions haven't been prevalent in Missouri since 1927 when the last known animal was killed near the Bootheel. Now it seems conservationists have indisputable proof that mountain lions exist in the wild in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation states one male mountain lion was trapped alive in the Mark Twain National Forest in Reynolds County. Although sightings of the animal have been confirmed since 1994, it is rare for someone to have a face-to-face encounter or even capture one alive in Missouri.

Here's a look at this case, and mountain lions in Missouri in general.

* The captured cat was 122 pounds. An age was estimated to be around two years old. The creature was trapped in a cage and transported to the Current River Conservation Area and released after conservation agents sedated the mountain lion to calm the animal.

* Mountain lions once roamed freely in Missouri. Before human settlements, the predators hunted deer and elk for food. Deer in Missouri were over-hunted until the 1920s which in turn helped drive mountain lions to kill livestock for food. Less food, combined with being killed by farmers, depleted the population of mountain lions substantially.

* Only 27 confirmed sightings of mountain lions have been observed since 1994, when the Missouri Department of Conservation began to investigate occurrences of the animal once again. Most of the confirmed sightings happened in southeast and south central Missouri. Some have occurred in northern Missouri as well. Four have happened in Shannon County alone in the past 15 years.

* Mountain lions eat about one white-tailed deer per week. Males, such as the one captured alive in Reynolds County, may have a range of several hundred square miles.

* The Southeast Missourian has a picture of the actual mountain lion captured by Reynolds County Commissioner Wayne Henson. He brought the animal to Centerville, Mo., and caused quite a stir in town.

* The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports many sightings are confirmed by wildlife cameras. Sixteen of the 27 confirmed reports of mountain lions in Missouri have come in the past 14 months. Although there are no known breeding populations in the state, conservation agents believe the big cats are being pushed eastward from places like Kansas and Colorado.

* National Geographic states the mountain lion, or Felis concolor, is known by other names such as the cougar or puma. Although they commonly prey on deer, other animals such as coyotes, raccoons and porcupines can become meals for mountain lions. Arkansas has also had mountain lion sightings. On average, there are only four attacks upon humans per year in the U.S. and Canada with a single fatality on an annual basis.

Warner Bros. planning 56-day release window delays (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? For the past year, studios have been flirting with stretching out the delays on when Netflix, Redbox and Blockbuster can rent new releases, but it looks like Warner Bros. is going to be the first to take the plunge.

The studio plans to make the home entertainment companies wait 56 days from when new releases go on sale to offer DVDs and Blu-rays, according to a report from AllThingsD.

The move is seen as part of an ongoing effort by the industry to prop up a DVD market that has struggled to keep pace with plunging disc sales and a shift among many consumers to digital streaming.

A spokesman for Warner Bros. declined to comment on "speculation." Netflix, Redbox and Blockbuster did not respond to requests for comment.

AllThingsD reports that the new pacts will be announced at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Warner Bros.' distribution contracts with Netflix and Redbox are due up at the end of this month, according to an individual with knowledge of the deals. It is not clear when the pact with Blockbuster expires.

Under the current agreement, Netflix and Redbox are giving discounts on discs in return for honoring a 28 day delay on when they offer new releases.

The news comes as Time Warner subsidiary HBO said that it will no longer provide discs to Netflix. The red-envelope company can still buy discs from third-party distributors, thanks to the First Sale doctrine which allows companies to resell pre-recorded discs, but it will pay more for them.

If Warner Bros. gambit works, expect other studios to follow suit. If the battle over release windows that unspooled a few years ago is any guide, that will also mean lots of legal wrangling and bad blood.

NY pharmacy shooting a question of who fired gun (AP)

SEAFORD, N.Y. ? A modest shrine of flowers and American flags was placed near the front door of a pharmacy on New York's Long Island on Monday, steps from where an off-duty federal agent who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan was mortally wounded while trying to intervene in a pharmacy holdup.

Detectives, meanwhile, were conducting ballistics tests, interviews and likely reviewing video surveillance from nearby stores to unravel the sequence of events that led to the New Year's Eve killing of veteran ATF Agent John Capano, as well as the gunman, a career criminal who had served time in prison for armed robberies.

Many questions remain about their deaths. Chiefly, who shot them? Though the robber, identified by police as 43-year-old James McGoey of Hampton Bays, was armed with a pellet gun, police have not said whether he fired at Capano or whether Capano was armed. And two other men were present, one an off-duty NYPD officer and the other a retired Nassau County police lieutenant.

As they continue to try to determine what happened, police have given few details about the moments leading up to the shootings.

At about 2 p.m., McGoey went into Charlie's Family Pharmacy, a quiet family run store in Seaford and announced a holdup, police have said. Capano was in the store at the time. He is believed to have followed McGoey toward the door and confronted him.

At about the same time, someone ran into a deli several doors down owned by the retired Nassau County officer and told of the robbery in progress. The retired officer and the off-duty NYPD officer, who was a customer in the deli, went to the pharmacy. When they arrived, they saw Capano and McGoey in a skirmish outside the store. It is unclear who fired the next shots, but Capano and McGoey ended up dying of gunshot wounds.

If investigators determine Capano was killed by so-called friendly fire, it would mark the second such shooting in the suburban county in 2011. In March, a Nassau police officer in plainclothes was shot to death by a transit authority officer in Massapequa Park.

Nassau County Police Lt. Kevin Smith, a department spokesman, declined to comment on specific aspects of the investigation Monday. He would not elaborate on whether images of the shooting had been captured on camera but did say that it's become standard in investigations for the department to try to find surveillance video.

The shooting was the second deadly holdup in a pharmacy on Long Island in 2011; in June, a gunman opened fire in a drugstore about 30 miles east in Medford, killing two employees and two customers before fleeing with a backpack filled with painkillers.

McGoey had four robbery convictions on his record, three of which were pharmacy holdups, between 1990 and 2000, court records indicate. He was released from prison in August 2010.

Armed robberies at pharmacies in the U.S. rose 81 percent between 2006 and 2010, from 380 to 686, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Several physicians on Long Island have been arrested in an ongoing federal probe of prescription painkiller abuse.

The Seaford pharmacy was open Monday, but a clerk behind the counter said no one there wanted to talk about the shooting.

A funeral Mass for Capano, 51, was scheduled for Friday at St. William the Abbott Roman Catholic Church in Seaford.

"To come back and to be killed on New Year's Eve on the main street in his hometown community is just a horrible tragedy after everything he's gone through in his career," said U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford. King said his wife had taught Capano in fourth grade and the two families were close.

Capano, a 23-year veteran of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, taught U.S. military and local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq how to investigate blasts, said Rory O'Connor, assistant special agent in charge in the ATF's New York office. He lived in nearby Massapequa and was married with two children. He was at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for his father, Jimmy, a retired New York City police officer. King said the elder Capano was known as the "unofficial mayor" of Merrick Road, the main thoroughfare in Seaford.
