We?ve been peppered with emails and Twitter questions regarding a comment made Monday by Eagles coach Andy Reid regarding his decision not to challenge the ruling that Falcons defensive back Kelvin Hayden had intercepted a pass thrown by Philly quarterback Mike Vick in Sunday night?s loss at Atlanta.? Reid, who typically keeps the red flag tucked deep in his pocket, said he didn?t throw it in that instance because his staff didn?t get a second look at the play.

?Well there was no replay for us to look at, and I actually had the people from the broadcast apologize, send me an email and apologize on that, but listen, that?s hindsight now,? Reid said.

Reid is right, for the most part.? NBC generated a replay.? Actually, NBC generated multiple replay angles.? But it was only after the window for challenging the play had closed (i.e., the next snap of the ball) that NBC detected an angle that would have triggered a reversal of the play, if Reid had decided to throw the red flag.

Fred Gaudelli, the producer of NBC?s Sunday Night Football and a long-time veteran of live pro football telecasts, explained the situation to PFT by phone on Monday afternoon.

Gaudelli said that, when he saw the play live, he?immediately?wondered whether Hayden had caught the ball cleanly.? And so Gaudelli ordered up immediately the angles that he thought would show whether the interception had indeed been made.

?We looked at the replays as fast as we could to show if he mantained possesion,? Gaudelli said.? He pointed out that, for a ball caught in the middle of the field that possibly was trapped, the best possible looks come from the cable cam, the low end zone camera, or the high end zone camera.? ?The two low end zone cameras were blocked,? Gaudelli said, ?and the high end zone camera was blocked by Hayden?s body.?

During the process of checking the replays, the Falcons smartly hustled to get the ball snapped, so that no review could be conducted.? Gaudelli said that 40 seconds elapsed before quarterback Matt Ryan got the next play started.? And two plays later, the Falcon had scored a touchdown.

After the touchdown, while the game was in a commercial break, Gaudelli decided to indulge his lingering curiosity.? ?We checked the 45-degree angle from the opposite end of the field behind the Eagles offense,? Gaudelli said, ?and it showed that [Hayden] didn?t catch the ball.?

Gaudelli knew at that point that the information needed to be shared with audience.? ?The No. 1 objective was to get it right, even though it was going to bring warranted criticism,? Gaudelli said.

Given that 22 players and seven officials are on the field, there?s no guarantee that clear images will be available.? ?There?s a certain amount of luck that?s involved,? Gaudelli said.

And so Gaudelli relied on his experience in ordering up the replay angles, his team did as much as they could with the 40 seconds that were available, and in the end they simply didn?t see the right angle until it was too late.

After the game, Gaudelli apologized for failing to get the fourth replay angle up sooner.? ?I feel badly about it,? Gaudelli said.? ?I would have sent that to any coach.?

Notwithstanding our partnership with (and my separate employment by) NBC, it?s easy to admire Gaudelli for showing on the air the definitive angle after it was too late for the Eagles to challenge the play, for apologizing to Reid for failing to show the definitive angle before the next snap, and for explaining the situation both to me and, separately, to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Ga. inmate wants polygraph test before execution

ATLANTA?? Attorneys for condemned Georgia inmate Troy Davis say they have asked state officials to allow him to take a polygraph test before his scheduled execution.

Attorney Stephen Marsh tells The Associated Press on Tuesday night that they have asked state prison officials and the pardons board for the test. Davis is scheduled to die Wednesday night. It is the fourth time in four years that Davis' execution has been scheduled by Georgia officials.

He has long claimed he is innocent of killing Mark MacPhail, an off-duty police officer working as a security guard in Savannah, Georgia in 1989. But state and federal courts have repeatedly upheld his conviction.

Prosecutors and MacPhail's relatives say they have no doubt the right man is being punished.

A prisons spokeswoman says she is unaware of the request and the pardons board didn't immediately respond.

On Tuesday, Georgia's pardons board rejected a last-ditch clemency plea despite high-profile support from figures including the pope and a former FBI director for the claim that he was wrongly convicted.

Steve Hayes, spokesman for the Board of Pardons and Paroles, said the panel decided to rejected Davis' request for clemency after hearing hours of testimony from his supporters and prosecutors. The board did not elaborate on the decision in its written official response to the clemency application.

The decision appeared to leave Davis with little chance of avoiding the execution date. Defense attorney Jason Ewart has said that the pardons board was likely Davis' last option.

Davis' lawyers have long argued Davis was a victim of mistaken identity. But prosecutors say they have no doubt that they charged the right person with the crime.

Recanted testimony
Davis has captured worldwide attention because of the doubt his supporters have raised over whether he killed MacPhail. Several of the witnesses who helped convict Davis at his 1991 trial have backed off their testimony or recanted. Others who did not testify say another man at the scene admitted to the shooting.

The U.S. Supreme Court even granted Davis a hearing last year to prove his innocence, the first time it had done so for a death row inmate in at least 50 years. But in that June 2010 hearing, Davis couldn't convince a federal judge to grant him a new trial. The Supreme Court did not review his case. Federal appeals courts and the Georgia Supreme Court have upheld his conviction, leaving the parole board as his last chance.

MacPhail's relatives said they were relieved by the decision. "That's what we wanted, and that's what we got," said Anneliese MacPhail, the victim's mother. "We wanted to get it over with, and for him to get his punishment."

Davis' legal team said in a statement it was "incredibly disappointed" by the board's decision.

"The death penalty should not be exercised where doubt exists about the guilt of the accused. The Board did not follow that standard here," he said. "The state's case against Mr. Davis, based largely on discredited eyewitness testimony and an inaccurate ballistics report, cannot resolve the significant, lingering doubts that exist here."

Yuma school leads state in cancer fundraiser, school, carter ...

One Yuma school is the leader of the pack in Arizona.

Desert View Academy raised more than all other Arizona campuses this year that participated in Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies fundraiser to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

The Yuma school collected a total of $9,771.62 during the three weeks that the fundraiser was held, beating out a second place Mesa school Desert Ridge Junior High School by $1,019.93.

Cindy Carter, character education instructor at Desert View, said the class that raised the most funds at each participating school was awarded with a pasta party at their local Olive Garden, which is a great incentive. But the best incentive for students at Desert View is making a difference.

After losing a teacher, an instructional aid and a handful of parents to various forms of cancer, Carter shared that this cause is very dear to the hearts of those at Desert View.

?We're tired of these diseases and we want to do our part to stop them so people don't have to suffer,? she said.

Carter explained that Desert View has participated in this program for the past eight years, but after the recent passing of former teacher Elda Neketin, they decided that they wanted to dedicate their fundraising in her honor as well as in memory of all staff, friends and family that had been lost to cancer.

She shared that Neketin's class would always lead the way in raising funds for this cause. After her passing, the school decided to raise the most funds in Arizona ? and they succeeded.

Students took up odd jobs here and there, Carter noted, and some even contributed some their own birthday money to the cause.

It has always been the mission of the school to not only teach students about character, but to do our very best to live what they teach, she said.

Parents also got involved, Carter shared, noting that parent volunteers, led by Jennifer Freedman, were a tremendous help during the weeks that they raised funds.

Administrative Assistant Anita Aldama commented that parents were helpful in not only collecting the funds, but also in getting the students pumped up and excited about the cause.

?This fundraiser is a great platform for us to show our students what it means to be caring and a good citizen and to help those in need,? Carter said.

She explained that each K-6 student attends a character education class weekly to learn more about how to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and a good citizen, but it also ingrained throughout the campus community as well.

?Part of our responsibility as people of good character is that we help those in need. I'm very proud of how compassionate they are and how they are willing to step up to the plate and help those in need,? Carter said.

According to a news release, 115,000 first- through 12th-grade students in Arizona, Nevada and Utah collectively raised $296,000 to support cancer research. Those funds helped to add to the $61 million raised through Pasta for Pennies over the last 17 years to fund LLS's main mission: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.

?This year's Pasta for Pennies success is proof that anyone, no matter their age, can become involved and make a difference in the lives of others,? said John Caron, president of Olive Garden in a news release. ?All of us at Olive Garden commend the many students, parents, teachers and administrators who came together for this program and turned pocket change into millions of dollars for cancer research.?
