ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) ? Hip hop pioneer DJ Afrika Bambaataa (bam-BAH'-tah) has been appointed to a three-year term as a visiting scholar at Cornell University.

The appointment announced Tuesday was made by Cornell University Library's Hip Hop Collection in conjunction with the Ivy League school's music department.

Bambaataa will visit Cornell's upstate New York campus several days each year to talk to classes, meet with student and community groups, and perform the music he helped create and expand. His first visit will be in November.

Cornell officials say the university's library contains the largest national archive on hip hop culture, documenting its birth and growth by preserving thousands of recordings, fliers, photographs and other artifacts.

Creek County Families Return Home To Find Pets Injured, Burned ...

CREEK COUNTY, Oklahoma -

As more wildfire victims in Creek County are returning to their homes, some are making shocking discoveries.

As 60-foot flames raced up a hill toward his home, Marshal Hall said it was the closest thing to Hell he could ever imagine.

"By the time we made it out of the driveway, the house was already in flames," Marshal said.

Like so many wildfire victims, Hall and his family are starting over.

They have very little left, but each other.

"All of our pictures from way back in the 1800s?they're all gone," Marshal said.

Despite all they've lost, they're hopeful one thing will survive the flames.

"She was trying to save her babies," said ten-year-old Madison Hall.

Madison's pet cat, Roxie, who she's raised since she was a kitten, was burned while trying to get her litter of kittens to safety.

"When I see her, I can barely talk," Madison said.

Roxie is being treated at the Animal Emergency Center in Tulsa.

"Only God knows why that cat is still alive, because I went to wipe stuff off her eyes and skin peeled right off of her," Marshal said.

As more people return to their burned homes, more injured pets are being discovered, like this lab mix found west of Mannford.

Infection is the biggest worry. Narcotics help dull the pain.

"We take the dead flesh off, and let the good flesh grow," Veterinary Assistant Anita Vreeland said.

Vreeland said she sometimes cries when Roxie purrs or an injured dog lovingly wags its tail.

She said she fears there may be hundreds more animals like these, wandering, lost and hurting.

"Don't forget them. They're out there, and they need our help," Vreeland said.

Vreeland said Roxie will likely recover, but it will take time and tender loving care.

For Madison, it's hard to wait and worry. The family is holding out hope for Roxie, when hope is about the only thing they have left.

"She's going to be an inside cat now and she's probably going to sleep every night in my bed now," Madison said.

"They said she's a fighter, and we pray to God she does pull through," Marshal said.

The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is helping with the care of burned and injured animals, but they need financial donations.

Health Care Reform: What are you doing about it?

The term ?Health Care Reform? strikes fear into all sides of the political world. Every person has an opinion on what should be done with our health care system, yet as the years continue nothing is done about it. The problem is that we as a society continually spend more than we take in on a variety of things which has put this nation in an economic downturn that desperately needs help. It is the age old adage that you simply cannot spend more than you make. There was an interesting article in Fortune Magazine this month, in which there is an interview by Geoff Colvin who interviewed Dr. Ralph De la Torre, CEO of Steward Health Care System. I have included some excerpts from the interview.

Q: Assuming Obamacare is fully implemented, what are the most important ways in which it will affect our lives?

A: The guiding principles were to do two things. One is to expand coverage. The other is to change the fundamental way health care is structured. Right now we?re a society that believes you lead life the way you want to, and then at the end when the wheels start falling off the cart, you pound it with resources and get interventions from medical specialists to keep you alive longer and healthier. It?s a very back-ended ? and because of that a very expensive ? way of getting health care.

If we?re going to increase access and engage people to get their health care in a different way, we have to get young people involved. We have to get people who for all practical purposes really don?t need health care insurance. We?re going to be suffering from the fact that we never paid for wellness or prevention in the past, and the baby boomers are now coming of age. We can?t pay for it all without putting a tax on the young ? call it what you want to call it, it?s the truth. But by getting the young involved in health care through an individual mandate, it also lets you begin wellness and prevention.

We need to understand as Americans that it?s going to cost us more for the next five, six, seven years or more. There?s no way around it. We?ve increased access, and we?re shifting our care to include more prevention and more wellness, but we can?t turn away the people who weren?t part of that to begin with, so we?re going to be double-paying for a while. In the long run we need to do that. We need to start that shift now.

Medical costs in the U.S. are growing faster than the economy. That trend can?t continue. It?s got to stop, so how is it going to stop?

It stops by attacking the culture, getting people to engage more in wellness and prevention, and also by challenging providers and caregivers to treat based not on hope but on reality.

A lot of us physicians went into medicine because we loved the art aspect of it. There wasn?t a lot of real hard-core science when many of today?s doctors went into medicine. It was your intuition, your abilities, the gestalt of what was going on. But something happened in medicine along the way. It started becoming a real science, and a lot of studies have come out that guide what we do and how we do it. We as a society need to understand that science has to guide our practice of medicine. Not everyone with a headache needs a CAT scan; not everybody with a sprained ankle needs an MRI.

You emphasize the need for greater attention to wellness and prevention. But why haven?t we Americans taken better care of ourselves in the first place?

It?s not who we are. America is a very young country, and we suffer from all the ills of young people: immortality complexes, neglect of our future. America didn?t think it would ever grow old and get sick. We believed in that old line: Live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse ? until you get old. Then you don?t want to leave a corpse. You want to live forever.

You?ve hosted the President at your house for a Democratic fundraiser. Have you advised him on health care policy?

I always give my opinions, but they?re not always listened to by either side of the aisle. One of the harder realities is that health care reform is not about public health. That?s the mistake people make. In public health policy we try to figure out, say, the incidence of colon cancer in 50-year-olds. We do a study, and we say, ?Anybody age 50 or over should get a colonoscopy, and if you have a first-degree relative with colon cancer, it should be at 40.? That?s public health policy.

Health care reform is public finance. And when you get into public finance, it?s not about doing a study to guide policy; it?s about creating a business plan. In a business plan you need an end picture of where we want to be in five or 10 years. For both sides of the aisle, the part that?s missing is an end picture. It?s not about next year; it?s what?s going to happen in five and 10 years, and then let?s back into it. Politically I don?t know if that?s doable, because I?m a businessman, not a politician. Thank God.

I have to agree with De la Torre, the medical industry is definitely behind in the times. The new wave of health care is going to be prevention because something has to change and? businesses will continually look for new ways to save money on health insurance. Soybean pests have been hard to figure out in 2012. Some pressure was seen towards the end of July into August. Soybean pests, including soybean aphids and two-spotted spider mites are not at consistent levels in all fields this year. Some fields have been sprayed and other fields are not seeing pressure at high enough levels to warrant treatment.

Farmers are questioning whether or not treatment is necessary at this point. The best answer we can give is that you need to scout your soybean fields to determine the population and pressure of soybean pests. Scouting is the best way to understand where that particular field is at. A neighboring field treated for pests does not necessarily warrant treatment on your field.

?

Soybean aphids have become a perennial pest for Minnesota soybean growers since 2002. Aphids are small (1/16? or less) and they are typically light green check for aphids in the soybean canopy. Signs of aphids include white skin casts of molting aphids, honeydew (sap excreted by aphids), or sooty mold (a black mold that grows on honeydew. One method of quickly estimating soybean aphid populations is to employ "Speed Scouting." This is a method of estimating aphid numbers using the presence or absence of aphids on a plant. Bruce Potter, Integrated Pest Management Specialist based at the University of Minnesota, Lamberton Research and Outreach Center, recently reports that this year is not shaping up to be a high pressure year for soybean aphids from a soybean crop perspective. Winged aphids have been leaving Southwest Minnesota fields since the end of July. Winged aphids may be leaving soybean fields, but there are few aphids around to replace those aphids. Aphid populations might or might not build to economic threshold levels in newly colonized fields. It may be that economic threshold populations could occur later than normal. Look for aphids low in the canopy to get a reliable estimation of infestation level. Use the 250 aphids per plant, with 80 percent or more of the plants in the field harboring aphids until R6 stage soybeans. This stage is known as the ?green bean? stage or beginning full seed stage.

According to Ken Ostlie, Extension Entomologist at the University of Minnesota and Bruce Potter, prolonged drought raised the threat of the two-spotted spider mite outbreaks in soybeans and corn. Spider mite outbreaks are rare but have occurred more frequently in recent years (1988, 2007, 2009, and 2010). Two-spotted spider mites are minute (<0.002 inch), greenish, yellowish to orange arachnids with two dark spots on their abdomen. Note, that two-spotted spider mites have 8 legs, not 6 as in insects. Spider mite adults are half the size, or less, of the smallest soybean aphid nymph. They attack a variety of plants including soybeans, dry beans, alfalfa, corn, vegetables, ornamentals, and trees. Mites overwinter as eggs and move into crops from permanent vegetation. Hatching mites colonize the undersides of leaves.

Spider mites injure leaves by piercing cells and sucking out cell contents. The injury produces white or yellow spots or ?stipling? that is the heaviest on the underside of leaves. Infestations typically will be first observed near field edges where soybeans are stressed. If lower leaf loss, yellowed or browning spots are noted at the field edge, it is time for detective work. Examine near roadsides, ditches or alfalfa. Pull plant and examine the leaves from the bottom upwards. Look for stipling or webbing. Tap leaves over a white sheet of paper or utilize a hand lense. Determine how far mite symptoms have progressed up the plant. If observed. Move at least 100 feet into the field to determine presence.

Ostlie and Potter developed a scale in 1988 to help determine mite infestation. The spray threshold is when there is heavy stipling on lower leaves with some stipling progressing into the middle canopy. Mites will be present in middle canopy with scattered colonies in upper canopy. Lower leaf yellowing is common and some lower leaf loss when at the spray threshold. Full pod (R4) and beginning seed (R5) soybean growth stages are critical in determining soybean yield.

It is important to note that most pyrethroid insecticides, except bifenthrin, are not terribly effective against two-spotted spider mites in Minnesota. Be sure to scout your fields for these pests. Earlier treatment of these pests does not mean that there will not be recolonization. Continue scouting your fields and be sure to contact the McLeod and Meeker County Extension Offices if you are looking for additional information.
