Hospitals Evacuate Ahead of Hurricane Sandy

Ambulances lined the streets of Hoboken, N.J. in the relative calm before Hurricane Sandy last night as Hoboken University Medical Center evacuated patients in the predawn darkness.

Hospitals along the east coast are preparing for the worst, which means postponing elective surgeries, stocking up on supplies, ensuring that backup power generators are ready to go, and, in some cases, evacuating patients.

?Patient safety always is paramount, and although the risks of the hospital losing all power are small, all safety precautions must be taken,? said the medical center?s CEO, Paul Walker.

Hurricane Sandy is affecting between 50 million and 60 million people as far west as the Great Lakes and as far south as North Carolina, emergency management officials said.? They said that Sandy, meeting with a cold front and a high pressure system, could become the worst storm since Hurricane Grace in 1991. Grace was nicknamed the ?Perfect Storm.??

The Hoboken hospital evacuated because of fears that surges from Sandy could breach Hoboken?s seawall, causing several feet of flooding. The Emergency Room and OB-GYN services for emergency deliveries remained open.

It?s taken at lease 40 ambulances from eight counties to complete hospital evacuations in New Jersey, where Sandy is expected to make landfall. Indiana will supply New Jersey with 48 additional ambulances, according to the EMS Task Force Facebook page.

VA New York Harbor Hospital and New York Downtown Hospital were evacuated as well.

Located on the southern tip of Manhattan, New York Downtown Hospital is not far from Battery Park. The hospital itself is not at risk for flooding, but the electrical grid nearby is, said Jeffrey Menke, the hospital?s president.

If the hospital loses power, back-up generators can run for 42 hours, but the possibility of not being able to get more fuel after that presented a risk the hospital couldn?t take, Menke said.

So on Saturday, all hospital employees were called in to assess their patients for transport. It was ?quite an ordeal,? Menke said.? He said it took 15 hours to move 125 patients? to other hospitals.

Through the evacuation, patients, including women in labor, still came for medical help because New York Downtown Hospital is the only one in its area.

?It?s not like you just close the doors and you don?t take care of patients,? Menke said, adding that the emergency department will remain open.

Other hospital systems said they would weather the storm.

North Shore-LIJ Health System?s 16 hospitals will remain open, but dozens of critically ill patients whose lives depend on mechanical devices, such as ventilators, were evacuated from Staten Island University Health Center and Southside Hospital, both close to the open water. Both hospitals were completely evacuated during Hurricane Irene last year.? For Hurricane Sandy, patients with critical illnesses were evacuated over the weekend and all elective surgeries were canceled.

NYU Langone Medical Center, which also evacuated last year, did not evacuate patients either, but all non-emergency surgeries for Monday and Tuesday have been canceled.

In Delaware, over which Sandy?s eye was expected to pass, there have been no hospital evacuations, said Emily Knearl, a spokesman for the state?s Health and Social Services Department.

LG Spectrum 2 made official for Verizon, brings Optimus LTE II to US for $100

Hints that LG would bring the Optimus LTE II to Verizon have persisted since the spring, which almost led us to wonder if the smartphone was still coming: not to fear, as it's finally here under the Spectrum 2 badge. Other than the expected switch-ups in navigation keys and the mix of both CDMA with global GSM roaming, the design will feel very familiar to anyone who's been on a trip to South Korea lately. The Spectrum 2 preserves the 4.7-inch AH-IPS display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage and support for wireless charging for those who buy a charging pad. We're also expecting a relatively light tweak of the software that keeps it running Android 4.0 for now, with LG's support for Tag+ stickers and QuickMemo being the standouts. We do wish we were looking at a quad-core Optimus G instead. For the moderate $100 post-rebate price, however, we'll take the two fewer processor cores -- especially when the Spectrum 2 is already on sale online and should be in retail stores sometime in the next few weeks.

Why a Verbal Agreement Isn't Enough for Estate Planning, Even if ...

We hear a number of stories about supposed verbal agreements made promising money and property to an individual, agreements that rarely holding up in court.? We, personally, see this most often in the probate courts due to the nature of our practice.? When contesting an individuals Will, many people claim that ?he promised me the house would be mine? or ?she said that when she died, I would inherit her retirement account.?? Unfortunately, most of these claims were never documented, and without signed agreements, the judge will rarely agree to honor the supposed arrangements.

Such a circumstance happened in the case of actor Marlon Brando.? Brando?s chief assistant and homemaker, Angela Borlaza, filed a lawsuit against his estate claiming that the actor purchased the home she was living in for her but chose to keep it in his name for tax purposes.? She also claims he promised her continued employment in a company he owned.? Borlaza states that she was locked out of Brando?s room in the days before his death in order for his producer and others to coerce his signature on the Will.? This Will gives them the right to develop his Tahitian estate into a tourist them attraction.

Through the lawsuit, Borlaza sought $627,000 (the market value of the Winnetka home she claims Brando bought for her) and $2 million in damages.? However, she settled for only $125,000.

Borlaza continues to insist she was telling the truth and that Brando?s signature on his will is a forgery ? despite handwriting experts saying it was a match.? We may never know what the truth was since Brando never created the proper documents to enforce Borlaza?s claims.? This is a reminder to us all that verbal agreements are not legally binding and need to be enforced with the proper documents.

Personal Coaching - Top 7 Basics and an Important Key | Business ...

Personal Coaching is becoming more popular in day-to-day living, to set goals, stay on track and achieve goals, while balancing family and work.

Personal Coaching helps a client to realize more of his potential, achieve his goals and enjoy success in many areas of life. Personal coaching also helps a client to succeed in business while maintaining quality time with family and a rewarding personal life.

Coaching is defined as- "a strategy used to help a client reach her fullest potential and achieve her goals. The coach first helps to define the goals, and then supports the client in executing them by mapping out a strategy and helping her stay on track. Coaching helps to balance work, family and social demands as well as leisure and spiritual activities." -by East End Guild of Wholistic Practitioners (eastendhealth.com/glossary.asp).

Top Seven Basics:

1) Why Coaching

Even when you have all the facts, it is easy to get distracted and lose focus. If your ambitions and goals are important to you, you need to make sure that you will stay on track. Coaching provides a solid opportunity to achieve your goals fast.

"Coaching can certainly help you strengthen your sense of self-worth, focus on your goals -- and get there, fast." - The London Daily Telegraph

People who are already successful in professional sports, in the entertainment industry or in the business world still have a coach because they understand the value that comes from coaching. That is how they keep on winning and make further progress.

2) When to Get Coaching

If I were preparing for a marathon, I would get a coach. If I am planning to start a new business, but do not know how, I would get a coach. I could have used coaching when I was trying to host my first website or when I was trying to learn a new tool. I could use coaching when I want to make progress in life or in business, or live a disciplined life. I could use coaching to set goals, to get support in executing them by mapping out a strategy and to get help to stay on track.

Can I do without coaching? Yes. I can learn on my own and do whatever is necessary to accomplish the desired outcomes. However, it takes longer and becomes difficult and there are pitfalls of giving up. If I can afford, I would get a coach, so that I can focus on achieving my goals and live a rewarding life with discipline. Coaching helps me to keep myself accountable and on track.

3) How to Find a Coach

Searching on the internet can bring you many options. You may also ask around in your personal network. When you ask around, look for the facts, not the opinions. Everyone's needs and goals are different. Choose the one that is suitable and affordable to your needs. See the expertise of the coach below.

4) Competence and Expertise of the Coach

Personal and Business Coaches Daniel Midson-Short and David Wood, PCC note that - coaches do not need to be certified to begin coaching, though it is important for development of the skill and the coaching profession. In addition, that - coaching the clients and helping them to change and improve their lives will give a coach more confidence and marketability than all the certificates the resume can hold. (Independent Report on Coach Training and Certification by Daniel Midson-Short & David Wood, PCC)

There are many successful coaches - some are certified, some are not.

A client should choose a coach with whom he feels comfortable and who is suitable for his specific needs. Client can try the free sessions and see if a particular coaching program is suitable and affordable for his or her needs.

If you are looking for a general life coaching, any life coach may do. If you have specific goals and needs, you need a coach who is competent enough or who has experience in coaching others with similar goals. Example: Starting a web based business, online marketing, investment and trading, learning a new software language, developing and marketing software etc. Coaching is not training but a coach having knowledge of a particular field can greatly reduce your time and efforts.

5) Coaching Relationship

A solid coaching relationship is important for long-term success and ongoing progress of the client in accomplishing his goals with less stress and in less time. James Flaherty notes in "Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others" that the elements in a coaching relationship comprise of - mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual freedom of expression. Confidentiality is an important part of the communication in coaching. Client should open up to sharing the actual situations than what he thinks the coach wants to hear. Coach should be open enough to observe the things that matter without judging.

6) Commitment

Commitment to the coaching process should be from both client and coach. Both should agree about schedules, about what is possible and what is acceptable. Address any obstacles. Client is the one who needs to take action and it is his or her interest in focus in coaching. Coach holds the client accountable and encourages doing more. The schedules and action plans are flexible and can be adjusted based on the new circumstances or possibilities. Coach should state clearly the practical steps involved in accomplishing the desired outcomes, without trying to sugar coat, but at the same time believing in client's ability to achieve them through a practical approach.

7) Coaching Process

Identify the immediate concerns and future possibilities. Set goals, establish a strategy, and make an action plan. The purpose of the coaching is to help the client take action and stay on track. Therefore, it is an ongoing process for the duration of the coaching period. Coach and client communicate on scheduled intervals, anywhere from weekly to monthly basis. Client can be assigned with homework and assignments.

Coaching is a process of observation, correction and improvements. The purpose of the coaching has the client's best interests in focus. The same techniques become less effective overtime. That is how so many New Year resolutions fail. Therefore, the ongoing communication is an important key to get the full benefits of coaching. Rather than just a course, coaching is an ongoing, evolving process through questions and feedback.

Coach's goal is to keep the coaching sessions and the process as practical as possible for the client to succeed, as the client may already be busy with his own tasks.

When you establish goals and create an action plan, the progress should be measurable. Ex: If a client is struggling to stay motivated and disciplined to exercise regularly, with the help of a coach, if he is able to exercise regularly for 60 days, then this is identifiable. Coach's goal is to make the client take action towards the attainment of desired outcomes.

* Important Key: Commitment, Communication and Hope

Understanding the fact that coaching is for client's own benefit helps him stay committed to the coaching relationship. One's own resolution to continue the process is what keeps it going. It is easy to get bored and give up. Client and coach keep the communication going and address any obstacles and hindrances, and implement the required solutions and plans.

There must be something worthwhile that you (client) are trying to accomplish. Never lose sight of the HOPE - there is always a hope of getting to where you want be, as long as you do not give up.

In Vietnam, US relies on pirate site to network

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam (AP) ? It's a wildly popular website laden with unlicensed songs and Hollywood movies, a prime exhibit of the digital piracy that is strangling the music industry in Asia and eroding legitimate online sales around the world.

The free-to-download bonanza has pushed Vietnam's Zing.vn into the ranks of the globe's top 550 websites. But a few clicks inside the site reveal a surprising presence: the U.S. government, which maintains a bustling social media account there.

Washington is a vocal proponent of intellectual property rights in Vietnam as it is around the world, and a site like Zing would be shut down in the United States. But with space with for public diplomacy limited in Communist Vietnam, the American embassy uses its "Zingme" account to reach out to young people in Vietnam as it seeks to build closer ties with its former enemy.

The embassy's presence shows just how mainstream pirate sites have become in Vietnam, where the government does nothing to stop them operating. But it also raises questions whether Washington is legitimizing a renowned pirate site that record labels, singers and industry groups say ignores requests that it take down infringing material.

Coca-Cola and Samsung pulled their advertising from the site earlier this month because of piracy concerns following questions by The Associated Press. The move challenged Zing's business model and was praised by recording industry groups. Samsung said last week it was also closing its Zingme account for the same reason.

The embassy said it recognizes the concerns for U.S. copyright interests posed by Zing but that it believes that contact with the website's users could reduce traffic or infringing activity on it. The mission sometimes uses its Zingme page to post about copyright infringement.

Its statement noted that the site had removed, at its request, the link to infringing material that appears on other Zingme pages as a matter of course. It also noted to its lack of options in a country where the Communist government controls the media, saying "there were few spaces for public discourse and intermittent access to Facebook", referring to a block the government sometimes puts on the American social networking site.

But not everyone thinks engaging with Zing is the right thing to do.

"Here we are as an American company trying to set things right with one of the biggest pirates in Vietnam but the U.S. embassy is essentially showing its support by being on its site," said Mimi Nguyen, an American who has been trying fruitlessly to get Zing to take down some 10,000 songs owned by her family's business for a year.

"It is really sad to find out the embassy is using their platform."

The Recording Industry Association of America, which praised the decision by Samsung and Coke to withdrawn from Zing and has labeled Zing a "notorious" pirate site, said it was neither endorsing nor criticizing the embassy's decision to maintain the site.

Neil Turkewitz, a senior vice president at the association, said he imagined the embassy had tried to balance the ability to target a tech-savvy demographic with anti-piracy messages against the appearance of a connection between it and the site.

"My guess is that it wasn't an easy decision," he said.

The recording industry around the world is struggling to make money from online distribution models, and illegal downloading remains rampant. Artists and producers in much of Asia are feeling the pinch especially hard because governments have failed to pass or enforce anti-piracy laws. Licensed CDs, films and downloads can cost the equivalent of a day's salary, making it even harder to wean people off pirated products.

In Vietnam, inaction by a government that sees no political upside in cracking down on what many see as a victimless crimes has pushed the industry to the point of collapse. Zing is seen as the No.1 enemy by those who speak out against its effective stranglehold over the country's music industry.

"Zing is destroying the industry and they know it," said record producer Quoc Trung, who is leading a campaign against online piracy. "We need people to pay for music, not just click on it. It is now or never."

Zing, which declined repeated requests for comment on this article and a previous one, has used free download to become the sixth-most visited site in Vietnam, and the second most popular Vietnamese music download site. Around 15 percent of its visitors are from overseas. It is not the only infringing website in Vietnam by far, but it is the most visited.

Sites that offer pirated content alongside other Internet services like Zing exist elsewhere around the world and are among the most reprehensible, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

"They want to appear as legitimate actors, and have functions unrelated to piracy, yet operate network services that include features that intentionally and effectively induce infringement," it said in a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative in August asking the government to use all the tools at its disposal to ensure Zing and others are not permitted to undermine legitimate online markets.

"These services deliberately gain market share by providing access to infringing materials, launching music services without any form of licensing, and have demonstrated continued resolve to engage in conduct based upon misappropriation."

Zingme closely resembles Facebook, which recently overtook the Vietnamese site in subscriber numbers, according to one research group. Facebook is sometimes blocked by the government because of fears it could be used to mobilize dissent against its one-party rule. Zingme is never blocked, and is more popular with younger, less educated Vietnamese. Companies and institutions often have accounts on both. The embassy has more than 18,000 friends on Zingme, compared to 12,000 on Facebook.

Many in the industry have no choice but to work with Zing even as it distributes their music and films for free. Not having your music on the site means getting an audience for live concerts, or attracting commercial sponsorship, is almost impossible, industry executives said. But a few are pushing back, among them established singer Le Quyen, who is suing Zing and eight other infringing websites.

"I'm sure that Zing is aware that what they do is wrong, but they are afraid that other singers will put pressure on them if I win the case," she said before one of her near-weekly concerts at a venue owned by her husband here. "That's why they keep avoiding my demands. Their tactic is to drag the case on until their opponent gets tired and gives up."

Some in the industry predict Zing and other websites will embrace a more legitimate model, rather like Baidu in neighboring China, which after years of complaints from international and local record labels about pirated content signed a licensing deal with its former critics last year. Major Western record labels eager to sell music in the 13th most populous country in the world have been in early talks with Zing and other sites, but there is no deal on the horizon.

For now, the sites are not taking down their unlicensed content because doing so would mean that users would flock to that of a rival, and new ones are cropping all the time. Those offering unlimited downloads of Hollywood movies for a monthly subscription as low as $2 are amassing large audiences, and could be looking to leveraging their popularity to become legitimate providers.

"In Vietnam, you build an audience first, and then you negotiate," said Phung Tien Cong, a manager at MVCorp, which is trying to establish a pay-for-song business in collaboration with Zing, other websites and license holders.
