Terminator 5 Gets a Pair of Writers - Film Junk

With Arnold Schwarzenegger?s big comeback movie The Last Stand set to hit theatres this weekend, we?re finally getting an update on the latest installment in what is his most successful franchise of all time. The Terminator series has changed hands a number of times in recent years, and after the disappointing performance of Terminator Salvation, it eventually ended up being acquired by Megan Ellison (Annapurna Pictures) and her brother David (Skydance Productions). Since then it has been unclear whether they were intending to continue the story from Terminator Salvation or do something completely different. While we still don?t know what their plan is, we do know that the project is slowly moving forward with a pair of screenwriters being hired this week to get the ball rolling. Can they possibly come up with a story that will get this franchise back on track?

According to Deadline, Skydance and Annapurna have hired Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier to pen the script for Terminator 5. Their combined credits are not particularly impressive; Lussier co-wrote Drive Angry and directed the My Bloody Valentine remake, while Kalogridis wrote Night Watch, Pathfinder and Alexander. However, Kalogridis did write the screenplay for Martin Scorsese?s Shutter Island and perhaps more importantly she has a connection to James Cameron, having executive produced Avatar and co-wrote Battle Angel with him.

Arnold himself has expressed some confusion over the future of the Terminator franchise in the past, although there were some reports just last month that he had confirmed his involvement in T5. However, when he?s officially on board for a project, he usually can?t stop plugging it (as evidenced by his constant enthusiasm for The Legend of Conan). Either way, I am not quite sold on these writers and the Ellisons clearly still have their work cut out for them. Are you glad to hear that Terminator 5 is happening? What do they need to do to save this franchise?
