North Murray High School?s boys tennis team finished second in the Region 5-3A tournament at Cartersville?s Dellinger Park, losing to Cartersville in the championship after a thrilling win over Coahulla Creek in the semifinals.
Cartersville won the title match 3-1, with a fifth court still in progress when the Purple Hurricanes clinched the title. The No. 2 doubles team of Mark Lents and Wesley Ross got the lone win for North Murray, 6-4, 6-2, but the Mountaineers will still host in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament when it begins next week.
Against Coahulla Creek, the Mountaineers (15-3) got a singles win from No. 1 Drew Mosteller, 6-0, 6-0, and a doubles victory from No. 1 Jacob Ledford and Alex Ellis, 6-3, 6-4. Coahulla Creek countered with singles wins from No. 2 Jake Mathis, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Alex Jarjoura to knot the match at 2-2 with the No. 2 doubles match left to decide the outcome.
Lents and Ross lost the first set 4-6, but battled back with a 6-1 win in the second before being pushed to a tiebreaker in the third. The duo won 7-1 in the tiebreaker to deliver the Mountaineers the 3-2 overall victory.
?It got a little rowdy,? Mosteller said of the doubles match as both teams? players gathered around the court. ?Everyone was getting into it, and it was just everyone wanting to win and being competitive. We were dancing when they won.?
The Mountaineers will host the No. 3 seed from Region 8-3A in the first round. North Murray coach Amanda Bynum said Region 8-3A will hold its tournament later this week.
Coahulla Creek?s girls finished third, while the boys were fourth.
In the third-place match, the Colts (10-7) lost 3-1 to Sonoraville, getting a singles win from Jarjoura, 6-3, 6-0.
The Lady Colts (8-9) were swept 3-0 by Cartersville in the semifinals but rebounded to defeat Adairsville 3-2 for third place, sweeping singles with wins from No. 1 Erin Orem, 6-0, 6-1, No. 2 Katherine Sheppard, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and No. 3 Vanessa Suarez, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
It?s the first trip to state for both Coahulla Creek squads, who will travel in the opening round.
?I like the determination of the girls to keep pushing forward,? Coa-hulla Creek coach Laura Jager said.
?Our goal was to have at least one go to state, and we?re thrilled to have two.?
? At the Region 7-2A tournament, the season came to an end for Murray County?s boys, but the Lady Indians won their-first round match in the eight team bracket to clinch a spot in the Class 2A state tournament, which starts next week.
In matches played on the Calhoun Recreation Department courts, the fourth-seeded Lady Indians (10-6) beat fifth-seeded Model 3-2 behind singles wins from No. 1 Gabbie Bordelon, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 2 Allison Jones, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, plus a doubles win by No. 1 Erica Steelman and Chloe Brown, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Murray County fell 5-0 to No. 1-seeded Armuchee in the semifinals, but will take on third-seeded Pepperell for third place at 10 a.m. today.
First-year Murray County coach Becky Quast said the Lady Indians have been working on adjusting to opponents, a strategy that was helpful in Tuesday?s tournament play.
?My girls have been really strong this season and they played really good tennis today,? she said. ?It was a really critical match and my girls did what they needed to do to win.?
The Indians, who were seeded seventh, lost 5-0 to second-seeded Armuchee and ended their season with a 3-12 mark.
? Whitefield Academy 3, Christian Heritage 1: The lone win for the Lions (6-9) came at No. 1 singles as Phillip McClure won 6-2, 6-2, but Christian Heritage was eliminated in the opening round of the Area 4-A tournament at Darlington.
Baseball
? North Murray 4, Coahulla Creek 0: Aaron Granger held the Colts to four hits while earning the complete-game victory in a Region 5-3A contest in Chatsworth.
Granger ? who struck out six and didn?t allow a runner past second ? also had a two-run single with the bases loaded in the sixth. Lake Burris went 2-for-3 with a double for the Mountaineers (8-11, 5-5), who scored their first run on an Ethan Lents sacrifice fly in the third; a Coahulla Creek (7-13, 4-7) error led to another run in the inning.
Blake Phillips took the loss for the Colts after giving up six hits while striking out four in six innings of work.
? Southeast Whitfield 3, Ridgeland 2: Southeast?s Rhett Harper, who missed all of this past basketball season after tearing his ACLin a loss to Dalton on the football field last fall, made his athletic return ? and he made it count.
On his first swing of the year, Harper connected on a first-pitch fastball as a pinch hitter in the fifth for a sacrifice fly that drove in Austin Pratt for what proved to be the winning run.
Jose Vargas was 2-for-3 with a double and Pedro Vargas added an RBI. On the mound, Pedro Vargas pitched five innings of three-hit ball to get the win, while Tyler Hale pitched two innings in relief to earn the save for the Raiders (5-18, 2-11 Sub-region 7B-4A).
? Northwest Whitfield 11, LaFayette 1: Diego Peralta was 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Bruins (18-3, 13-0 7B-4A) rolled to the run-rule shortened win.
Kyle Brock was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, while A.J. Oroczco went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. The Bruins also got doubles from Brady Middleton, Edwin Hernandez and Andy Whisenant, plus RBI singles from Will Brock and Walker Maret.
? Heritage-Catoosa 7, Dalton 1: The Cats (10-11, 9-4 Sub-region 7B-4A) managed just four hits at home as Kaleb Hill went 2-for-3 and Brandon Dale had the lone RBI. On the mound, Dale gave up five earned runs in six innings to take the loss.
Dalton will need to sweep the final two games of this week?s three-game series to take the sub-region?s No. 2 seed for the region playoffs.
? Pepperell 5, Murray County 0: Nick Stiles had the lone hit for the Indians (0-14, 0-12 Region 7-2A), who played error-free baseball on the road.
? Northwest?s junior varsity team ended its season with a sweep of host LaFayette on Tuesday. The Bruins (11-5-1) won the opener 3-2 and took the second game 5-1.
In the first game, Jack Creswell pitched four scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out seven, and he was also 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Aaron Ball added a double, while Caleb Shiflett and Austin Smith each drove in a run.
In the nightcap, Austin Morrison and Maret combined for a no-hitter as LaFayette?s lone run was unearned. Shiflet was 3-for-3 with an RBI, whil Logan Hilton had an RBI single.

Harley Jackson scored in regulation for Coahulla Creek, and Regina Pacheco, Melanie Pacheco, Jenny Contreras and Bivi Lopez each converted a penalty kick. Cabrera made five saves in regulation, while the Lady Colts outshot Sonoraville 32-5 in regulation.
? Coahulla Creek boys 6, Sonoraville 1: Pedro Garcia scored four goals to lead the Colts (10-4-1, 8-3 Region 5-3A), and Eddie Serrato and Ronnie Vargas each added goals. Goalkeeper Missael Fraire had four saves.
Track and field
? Murray County?s boys and girls teams each finished sixth in the eight-team Region 7-2A meets at Pepperell, but they claimed several top-four event finishes on the second day of the competition to advance to Class 2A West sectional competition April 27 at Greater Atlanta Christian.
Qualifiers for the Indians were Servio Martinez (3,200-meter run, third place, 10 minutes, 47 seconds); Jorge Romero (high jump, fourth, 5 feet, 10 inches); Kyle Padgett (triple jump, fourth, 37-10); and the 4x100 relay team of Leon Pritchett, Padgett, Bobby Defore and Aaron Chambers (fourth, time unavailable).
Qualifiers for the Lady Indians were Miriam Quiroz (300 hurdles, fourth, time unavailable); Shea Pendley (shot put, second, 29-11) and the 4x100 relay team of Chasidy Dixon, Destiny Bailey, Tiffany Markey and Keona Brinkman (fourth, time unavailable).
? On the first day of the Region 5-3A meet at Gordon Central, North Murray?s Jacob Mays won the boys long jump at 20-10 and Isaac Pacheco took the boys 1,600 title in 4:41.15.
Class 3A West sectional qualifiers for the Lady Mountaineers were Erin Robinson (shot put, second, 31-0) and Megan Pittman (shot put, fourth, 30-2).
For Coahulla Creek, A.T. Smith (triple jump), Ashton Patterson (shot put) and Desiree Sardina (shot put) qualified for the Lady Colts, who finished the day 11 points behind leader Cartersville.
For the boys, who are 12 points behind leader Sonoraville, Josh Foxx (long jump) and Cordarius Tarver (discus) qualified for state sectionals.
Individual distances, times and specific place finishes were not available for Coahulla Creek.
