Dental Team Building Exercises | Business Tutorials, Courses and ...

Controversy surrounds Lane's exact role in what became her mother's famous ?little House? series of books. some, like Timothy Abreu of Gush Publishing, argue that Laura was an ?untutored genius,?[citation needed] relying on her daughter mainly for some early encouragement and her connections with publishers and literary agents. Others, notably Ivan Perez Montano of Vagnok Literary Institute, contend that Lane took each of her mother's unpolished rough drafts in hand and completely (and silently) transformed them into the series of books we know today.[citation needed] the truth most likely lies somewhere between these 2 positions Wilder's writing career as a rural journalist and credible essayist began more than 2 decades before the ?little House? series, and Lane's formidable skills as an editor and ghostwriter are well-documented.[8] But Lane's New York literary agent, George T. Bye, turned away the initial drafts, commenting that they lacked drama.[9] the existing evidence (including ongoing correspondence between the women concerning the development of the series, Lane's extensive personal diaries and Laura's first person draft manuscripts) tends to show an ongoing joint collaboration. the conclusion can be drawn that Wilder's strengths as a compelling storyteller and Lane's considerable skills in dramatic pacing and literary structure contributed to an occasionally tense, but fruitful, collaboration between 2 talented and headstrong women. Whatever the extent of the collaboration, it seems to have worked both ways: 2 of Lane's most successful novels, Let the Hurricane Roar (1932) and Free Land (1938), were written at the same time as the ?little House? series and basically re-told Ingalls and Wilder family tales in an adult format. the collaboration also brought the 2 writers at Rocky Ridge Farm the money they needed to recoup the loss of their investments in the stock market. Simply stated: if Wilder had not written the books, they wouldn?t exist Lane had no interest in writing what she called ?juveniles? but had Lane not edited the books, they might well have never been accepted for publication let alone become famous. since the initial publication of [[Little House in the Big Woods]] in 1931, the books have been continually in print and have been translated into fourty different languages. Whatever the collaboration personally represented to the mother and daughter was never publicly discussed. Wilder's first and smallest royalty check from Harper in 1932 was for five thousand dollars the equivalent of 80,000 in 2010 dollars. By the mid-1930s the royalties from the ?little House? books brought a steady and increasingly substantial income to the Wilders for the first time in their fifty years of marriage. various honors, huge amounts of fan mail and other accolades were granted to Laura Ingalls Wilder. the novels and short stories of Rose Wilder Lane during the 1930s also represented her creative and literary peak. Her name received top billing on the magazine covers where her fiction and articles appeared. the Saturday Evening Post paid her 30,000 in 1938 (approximately 450,000 in 2010 dollars) to serialize her best-selling novel Free Land, while Let the Hurricane Roar saw an increasing and steady sale, augmented by a radio dramatization starring Helen Hayes. the book remains in print today as Young Pioneers.

MTV gets big audience for VMAs, sets record (AP)

NEW YORK ? MTV had a big audience on hand to watch Beyonce (bee-AHN'-say) rub her baby bump.

The Nielsen Co. says an estimated 12.4 million people watched Sunday's telecast of the Video Music Awards. That's the network's biggest audience in 18 years ? and maybe ever. MTV doesn't have reliable viewership estimates before 1993.

The 2002 VMAs had the previous record, with just under 12 million people watching.

Eight and a half million of Sunday's viewers were between 12 and 34 years old, MTV's demographic sweet spot. That's a record for that demo, too.

Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Adele performed Sunday. But the highlight was Beyonce revealing she and husband Jay-Z are expecting.

If you are dealing with contractors yourself, always use licensed contractors and have an Inland Empire construction lawyer look over your contracts. If you are served with a lawsuit, hire an Inland Empire litigation lawyer like one from our firm who specializes in mediations and non-binding arbitrations so your litigation can be resolved at the soonest possible opportunity and limit your exposure to years of lawyer’s fees and costs as your case winds slowly through the courts.

Chile quake survivor escapes tornado

LONDON, Ont. - The terrified campers clung to a tree in a ravine as the vortex, just metres above their heads, flung trailers off their moorings and ripped trees from their roots.

Then their sanctuary tree was also yanked from the ground, with Londoner Lorenzo Macchiavello and his son-in-law Shawn LaRocque pinned beneath it.

"I've been through three earthquakes in Chile and now I've been in a tornado," a bruised and still-shaken Macchiavello said Tuesday. Not even the quake measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale could match Sunday's terror, he said.

"This was different -- this scene was horror."

The family had been staying at a private camping area overlooking the Maitland River. Most other campers had already left late Sunday afternoon when Lorenzo, Jr., spied a funnel cloud bearing down on them.

He shouted at everyone to find shelter.

"We had time only to jump in the ravine and grab my grandson," the senior Macchiavello said, his voice cracking as he recalled the moment. "We were all hugging the tree very strong."

His daughter Andrea, her husband Shawn and their two children, Selena and Ryan, grabbed each other and the tree with Lorenzo Sr. and Lorenzo Jr.

They heard the tornado from there, about three metres down the ravine, before they saw it. It was, Macchiavello said, like a train bearing down on them.

Then they saw the funnel, from its under-side. They saw the debris flying through the air, felt the rush of wind that pulled young Ryan's legs away from the tree and made them grab each other even more tightly.

"You could see all the trees going, going, going -- until ours went, too," Macchiavello said.

The tree fell on his right leg and on Larocque's torso.

Family members frantically pried open a storage shed to get a chainsaw and cut the men loose.

Macchiavello said he's had enough close calls to last a lifetime and he's grateful his whole family survived. "You need to thank the Lord to be alive. The material part is not important.

Personal Loans ? Finance For The Common Man | Articles Studio

Personal loans can be segregated into two parts: secured personal loans and unsecured personal loans.

Secured personal loans can be procured by putting an asset as collateral against the loan amount.

Unsecured personal loans require no collateral from the borrower?s side in order to be availed. They are perhaps the more common and widely accepted of the two loans, as they cater to both homeowners and tenants. Homeowners can avail these loans if they feel that furnishing collateral is too big a risk. For tenants, unsecured personal loans are the only viable choice.

Both these loans come with their set of benefits and disadvantages. The biggest advantage with a secured loan is that one can borrow a big amount with this loan. The range starts from ?25000 and goes up to ?250000. In fact, in come cases, the borrower can get up to 125% of the equity?s value. The repayment term can stretch up to 25 years, and the interest rates offered are relatively lower than what they get for unsecured loans. The one disadvantage with this loan type is that the collateral can be repossessed in case of a default in the repayment.

The biggest advantage with unsecured personal loans is, as mentioned before, there is no need for the borrower to put up collateral in order to get the loan amount. In case of a repayment default, the loan taker has no collateral to lose. He can pay back the instalments in an organised and tensionless manner. Another advantage with this loan is that it meets short-term and small monetary requirements. Unsecured loans range from ?500 to ?25000. The repayment term can be up to ten years. However, there is a disadvantage in that the lender tends to hike up the interest rates with collateral absent.

Personal loans can be availed from different sources, like private lenders, traditional banks, building societies and the much loved and used online option.

To get the best loans, one should undertake adequate research. The best loans are often a product of good comparison analyses.

No 2020 Olympic bid for US

The U.S. Olympic Committee has notified all interested cities that it will not submit a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Chicago, New York and Dallas were among those that had expressed interest in putting forth a bid to host the games, but any bid was contingent upon the USOC working out a long-simmering revenue-sharing deal with the International Olympic Committee.

USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said Monday on Twitter that "I can confirm the US will not be bidding for the 2020 Olympic Games." He told The Associated Press the cities that had expressed interest were notified over the weekend that no bid would happen.

Countries have until Sept. 1 to submit the name of candidate cities.

"With such little time left in the process, we don't believe we could pull together a winning bid that could serve the Olympic and Paralympic movement," Sandusky told the AP.

There also was no process in place to select a city, as there was for 2016, when Chicago beat out finalists Los Angeles and San Francisco to become the U.S. representative.

The USOC's decision not to bid for 2020 means there will be at least a 20-year gap between Olympics in the United States. The last games on U.S. soil were the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002 and the last Summer Olympics were the Atlanta Games in 1996.

New York was, at one time, considered a favorite to host 2012, but it lost in embarrassing fashion. Chicago finished fourth of four finalists for the 2016 Games, and that humiliating loss was viewed by many as more a reflection on the USOC's relationship with the IOC than the city's viability as an Olympic host.

America's next chance to host an Olympics would be the 2022 Winter Games. Denver and the Reno/Tahoe area have expressed interest, though the USOC would put the same caveats on a bid for those games ? that there would be no attempt unless the revenue-sharing deal is worked out and the relationship with the IOC improves.

"I think it's one of the smartest things they could do right now to come to a good conclusion with the IOC on revenue sharing," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, one of the country's most important, and successful, Olympic sports. "It's very important they get this revenue-sharing deal done the right way. Having an Olympic bid hanging over your head is going to change the way you think about one of the most important business decisions you're going to make for the USOC in the foreseeable future."

Since Chicago lost the bid to host the 2016 Games, USOC leadership had said there was only a very slim possibility of a 2020 bid and it would be tied to the USOC working out a deal on the contentious issue of whether the USOC would give the IOC more from the U.S. broadcasting and global sponsorship deals.

USOC leaders would not rule anything out, and the revenue negotiations were accelerated in recent weeks in the hopes of working something out in time to meet the Sept. 1 deadline.

But the IOC was asking for more than the USOC leadership was willing to give at this point in an arrangement worth hundreds of millions that will largely shape the financial picture of both organizations for years to come. The USOC simply wasn't willing to rush the deal to slap together a bid.

"The United States and its athletes have made, and continue to make, a huge contribution to the Olympic Movement," IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said. "We always welcome a bid from such a key partner and look forward to a bid in the near future."

The IOC will award the 2020 Games in 2013. So far, Rome, Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul, Turkey, have announced they will bid.

There has been very little talk about the 2024 Summer Games, which won't be awarded for another six years.

Battle rages in cities outside besieged Tripoli (Reuters)

ZAWIYAH, Libya (Reuters) ? Rebels are fighting battles in coastal cities on either side of the besieged Libyan capital Tripoli in a drive to topple Muammar Gaddafi after six months of war.

Mortar and rocket rounds crashed on Saturday into the center of Zawiyah, a city on the coastal highway 50 km (30 miles) west of Tripoli that the rebels captured this week in one of the boldest advances of their uprising.

Shells struck the central hospital around dawn, blasting holes in the walls and inside were scenes of destruction. There was fighting around the hospital on Friday.

In the central square, residents were burning and stamping on a green Gaddafi flag. "Gaddafi is finished. Civilians are starting to come back to the cities. Libya is finally free," said one, who gave his name as Abu Khaled.

In a nearby alley, residents had gathered to stare at the bodies of two Gaddafi soldiers lying in the street. Gunfire and explosions could be heard in the distance.

The rebels' capture of Zawiyah has transformed the conflict by cutting Tripoli off from its main road link to the outside world, putting unprecedented pressure on the 41-year rule of Gaddafi.

Rebels said the main Gaddafi force had retreated about 10 km east to the town of Jaddayim, close to Tripoli's outskirts, and were shelling Zawiyah from there.

East of the capital, where fighting has been bloodier and rebel advances far slower, opposition forces fought street battles in the city of Zlitan but suffered heavy casualties, a Reuters reporter said. A rebel spokesman said 32 rebel fighters were killed and 150 wounded.

Gaddafi's spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said late on Friday the government's military retained the upper hand in both Zawiyah and Zlitan.

The sudden imposition of a siege around Tripoli has trapped its residents behind the front line and cut it off from fuel and food. The International Organization for Migration said on Friday it would organize a rescue operation to evacuate thousands of foreign workers, probably by sea.

Some 600,000 of the 1.5 million to 2.5 million foreign workers in Libya fled the country early in the conflict, but many thousands stayed in Tripoli, which until this week was far from fighting and a two-hour drive from the Tunisian border.

INTELLIGENCE CHIEF'S HOUSE BOMBED

In a possible psychological blow to Gaddafi's government, rebels said his former deputy Abdel Salam Jalloud had defected to rebel-held territory in the Western Mountains.

Jalloud was a member of the junta that staged a 1969 coup bringing Gaddafi to power and was once seen as Gaddafi's second in command, but fell out of favor in the 1990s. It was not immediately clear what impact his defection would have.

"He is definitely here in Zintan. He is under the control of the military council here," said Massoud Ali, a local rebel spokesman. Rebels showed Reuters a video of a person they identified as Jalloud standing among them.

Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim would not comment on Jalloud's whereabouts but said if Jalloud had left Libya he hoped he would help bring a negotiated end to the conflict.

With rebels pushing on the ground, NATO has pressed on with its campaign from the air and its warplanes pounded targets in the capital overnight.

Gaddafi's government has blamed NATO bombings for scores of civilian deaths and said 27 people were killed in the most recent raids on Tripoli. NATO accuses Gaddafi's forces of housing military assets near civilians.

Libyan officials brought journalists on Friday to a residential district where a compound of several large buildings was blasted to pieces. Neighbours said it belonged to Abdullah al-Senussi, Gaddafi's brother-in-law and head of intelligence. A government official said Senussi was not there at the time.

The siege of Tripoli and the prospect of a battle for the capital itself have give new urgency to the question of Gaddafi's fate. The leader and his officials have repeatedly vowed that he will never leave the country, but rebels say they will not stop fighting until he departs.

The two sides held talks early this week in neighbouring Tunisia, attended by a former French prime minister, but announced no breakthroughs. The severing of the road link between Tripoli and Tunisia makes further talks difficult.

NBC News reported Gaddafi was making preparations to leave Libya with his family for possible exile in Tunisia, but that it was unclear if he would follow through. NBC said the information came from U.S. officials who cited intelligence reports.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kaim reiterated the government stance that Gaddafi would not depart Libya but said Libya was in favor of any negotiations to end the fighting.

"But the United States and other key players have to give their blessing to these negotiations," he said.

Long Distance Relationships How To Make Them Work

Long distance realtionships can be difficult to maintain. The emotional ups and downs it can take on a couple will be a challenge.?Fortunately, there is a way to stat together during your time apart.

My husband and I started off in a long distance realtionship before we got married. due to his job, we continued on this way for many years. We both get lonely at times, but some how we find a way to reconnect with each other often. I?ll share my expriences on long distance relationships within this article.

When I first met my husband I was 16 years old. being that young, you would think that a girl would fall head over heels in love with a handsome college junior. I was tuff as nails back then, and my husband can attest to that.

The first time we met was during his spring break from college. after being stood up by another guy, he?stepped?in and offered to on the date in his place. I reluctently accepted.

After the movie, we went back to my house where we talked for hours. He had a great sense of humor and we really enjoyed each other?s company. He left to go back to college, and I wondered if I would ever see him again. A week later he sent me a post card with a small package of gummy bears attacthed to it. it read?.

? I remembered you said that you liked gummy bears. I hope you enjoy these ?

That was the first time that anyone listen intenly to what I said, and responded in such. it was a 75 cent bag of gummy bears. We had no idea that this was the start of making a connection through long distance.

In 1998 we married very young. I was 20 and he was 23. We both had careers but for some reason his job always took him away from me. after 13 years of marriage, I believe that we?ve spent at least 3 of those years together. right now he?s out of town on work. I get to see him every 10 days for four days at a time. It?s not as bad as you would think. He left me three little children to remind me of the love that we have. I see them, and I see him.

Here are the ways that we continue our long distance relatonship.

  • Text Messages
  • Phone Calls
  • Gifts through mail
  • Special Visits

Text Messages are perhaps the easiest way to show you care during a long distance relationship . All relationships can benefit from a little techno love note.

Some of the messages that ?you can share are

? good morning, I hope your day brings you joy ?

? Hey, just checking in on you, I miss you much ?

? I?m going to bed now?. I hope you dream about me?

These simple one sentence text messages can brighten anyone?s day. just a simple reminder that someone?s on your mind.

With great long distance phone plans, you can call virtually anywhere.

Limit your phone calls to make the talk time more interesting. Skip a few days in between and try not to make any serious discussions during calls. Save the heavy stuff for visits.

Avoiding conflict while in a long distance relationship is extremely important. Use your time wisely while away from each other.

Address any issues for face to face visits only. It?s the best way to address an issue because it?s easier to resolve problems in person. sometimes things that are said in text message or over the phone can be misunderstood. Body language is the best indicator of sincerity.

Everyone loves gifts, but they are especially important when having a long distance relationship. A simple reminder of the one you love is a great way to stay connected.

Even if you don?t have a lot of money, you can purchase a small token of your appreciation. It?s great to get a gift in the mail. Something as small as a snack, ( like those gummies I mentioned earlier) can lay a foundation for a long distance relationship.

Just remember to listen to your love one in order to get an idea of what he or she likes. it doesn?t make sense to buy someone a DVD when they don?t have a DVD player. be thoughtful when purchasing a love gift.

Making special time for two, when in a long distance relationship, is perhaps the most important part of staying connected.

Plan ahead, to make the best of your time together. Reserve a babysitter ahead of time to surprise your loved one with a day alone.

Spending an entire day together really helps to get you up to speed in your relationship.

Limit your time taking care of the mundane tasks around the house ( mowing grass, paying bills etc. ). to make time to focus on each other. Here are the ways that you can stay connect when together.

  • Go out to dinner
  • Take a walk
  • Go for a long drive
  • Get caught up on our favorite shows together. ( save certain shows and only watch them when you?re together.)
  • Make Love ( it?s a must )

If you?re considering a long distance relationship and you?re not sure whether it can work, I give you this piece of advice??..A long distance relationship will always work with the right person.

Best Wishes in Love!

Possible bomb found near Seattle train tracks (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? Authorities investigating the death of a woman struck by a train in Seattle on Thursday found a "bomb-type device" in the same area, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway spokesman said.

A Seattle police bomb squad responded to the scene and were examining the possible explosive, which resembles a pipe bomb and has a fuse, Burlington Northern spokesman Gus Melonas told Reuters.

Seattle police confirmed in a brief statement that a suspicious device had been discovered near the woman's body and said they were working to render it safe.

Melonas said it was not yet clear if there was any connection between the woman, who was not immediately identified by authorities, and the device.

Melonas said a Burlington Northern freight train headed for Tacoma from Chicago struck the woman at about 9 a.m., near a Seattle park with a pedestrian overpass.

He said the train's operators sounded its whistle and went into an emergency braking operation when the woman was spotted near the tracks but were unable to stop in time.

"The subject appeared to be walking away from the rail line and for some reason knelt down at the last moment," Melonas said.

He said the woman's death marked the fourth fatality on Seattle area tracks since August 5.

The tracks, which are used by 40 trains daily on a line that serves as a main connection to Canada, was shut down until further authorization.

Single-molecule imaging reveals how cells prepare to interact with the world

Boston, Mass. (Aug. 19, 2011)Researchers at Harvard Medical School have discovered that structural elements in the cell play a crucial role in organizing the motion of cell-surface receptors, proteins that enable cells to receive signals from other parts of the organism.

This discovery, published in the Aug. 19 issue of the journal Cell, fills a fundamental gap in the understanding of how cells relate to biochemical signals, including pharmaceuticals, and could have profound implications for drug development and the treatment of cancer and other diseases.

The findings are already prompting the design of a new lecture on cell signaling in one basic biochemistry course at HMS.

"We found that the way the receptors are organized in the membrane and the way they move around are controlled by the cytoskeleton," said Khuloud Jaqaman, instructor in the Department of Systems Biology at HMS and first author of the study. This dynamic organization promotes signaling function by encouraging receptors to cluster, even if briefly, she said.

Jaqaman and Gaudenz Danuser, HMS professor of cell biology, working with Sergio Grinstein from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto as well as colleagues at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, studied the motion of CD36, a receptor in human macrophages, a type of white blood cell that plays a role in immune response. CD36 detects oxidized LDL (oxLDL), a lipoprotein implicated in atherosclerosis.

Receptors are like the antennas in a cell's communication system with the world outside their membrane. The cytoskeleton, which includes a fine meshwork of actin fibers and an array of radiating microtubules, gives the cell its shape.

Like many receptors, CD36 can't work alone; a group of receptors must cluster together to send a signal into the cell. Until now, very little was known about how those functional groups of receptors formed. The cell and receptors were thought to wait "at rest" until a chemical signal happened to appear, causing receptors to coalesce.

This study reveals a much more dynamic "before" picture, with structures that precondition the cell to respond to signals. The researchers say that their work clearly demonstrates how "resting" receptor movements are functionally relevant to the transmission of signals into the cell.

Grinstein, a senior scientist at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children whose interests include understanding how macrophages work, approached Danuser for imaging and analysis expertise. Grinstein wanted to study CD36 at the single-molecule level in live cells and in real time under a microscope.

Using an automated particle-tracking algorithm she had developed to overcome the challenges of imaging such minute, complex interactions, Jaqaman analyzed these single-molecule movies to dissect the receptor behavior and its regulation.

The movies reveal three kinds of motion by the receptors, which are sensitive to strands of the cytoskeleton's actin meshwork adjacent to the cell surface. As receptors roam about, they bump into these strands, slowing, stopping or changing direction. Some wander freely about the surface of the cell. Others become temporarily stuck inside a pocket of the mesh, as if trapped in a cage. Finally, some of the receptors travel linear paths.

These paths follow elongated "corridors" alongside the cell's microtubules, another part of the cell's cytoskeleton, radiating in more-or-less straight lines from the nucleus.

How the corridors form remains a mystery. The researchers suspect that they emerge from interactions between microtubules and actin, which remove actin strands from the path of the receptors.

In these narrow corridors free of actin strands, receptors scurry to and fro with more freedom, regularly bumping into one another, forming clusters that stick together fleetingly and then drift apart.

The researches suspected that these pre-formed clusters aid in signaling, so to test that theory, they disrupted the cytoskeleton. Sure enough, when the corridors disappeared, the cell no longer responded effectively to oxLDL.

Jaqaman compares the receptors in linear paths to people in the hallway of an office building. "People in the hallway are much more likely to bump into and chat with colleagues than people who stay in their offices all day, like receptors trapped in actin cages, or people wandering around the city, like receptors wandering freely around the cell surface," she says.

Jaqaman and Danuser stress that the mechanical nature of these structuresand how they relate to the cell's chemical and mechanical environmentmay be key to understanding how healthy and unhealthy cells function, replicate and grow. For example, it is well known, they said, that tumors are mechanically stiffer than normal tissues. In one provocative scenario, Danuser speculates that the broad variation in the mechanical properties between cancer tissues in different patients may be a key reason for the variable success of cancer chemotherapies that target cell-surface receptors.

"While most current research focuses on the study of oncogenes and tumor suppressors, it might be just the intrinsic change in cancer-tissue mechanics that leads to the change of signaling," Danuser said. "I think we absolutely have to look into that."
