WikiLeaks' Assange downplays health concerns

LONDON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, holed up in London's Ecuadorian embassy for nearly six months, played down concerns about his health on Thursday, saying he enjoyed being at the centre of the legal and diplomatic storm.

Assange, 41, whose website angered the United States by releasing thousands of secret diplomatic cables, took sanctuary in Ecuador's embassy in June, jumping bail after exhausting appeals in British courts against extradition to Sweden for sexual assault allegations.

Ecuadorian officials have said the former computer hacker is suffering from a chronic lung ailment as a result of his long stay in the embassy.

Dressed in a dark suit and white shirt fastened with silver-coloured cufflinks in the shape of a 'W' and an 'L', Assange showed no outward sign of health problems.

"The confinement, the circumstances are obviously difficult," was all Assange would say when questioned about his health by Reuters.

"I rather enjoy being swept away in the storm of it all. You only live once so it's important that we do something that is meaningful with our time," he said.

He is said to be living a cramped life inside the modest diplomatic mission. He eats mostly take-out food and uses a treadmill to burn off energy and a vitamin D lamp to make up for the lack of sunlight.

The whistleblower said he has used his time at the embassy to focus on his work, including a book "Cypherpunks" in which he warns that the growing amount of personal data we store online could render society a "slave to the internet".

Speaking in a gilt-corniced conference room, accessed via an entrance hall decorated with a beaming portrait of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, Assange spoke vehemently about the dangers of cyber-surveillance by governments and private companies.

Manning still on witness list in WikiLeaks trial

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? Pfc. Bradley Manning remains on the list of prospective witnesses for a pretrial hearing on charges he gave classified documents to WikiLeaks.

The hearing at Fort Meade enters its third day Thursday. Manning's lawyers argue that all charges should be dismissed due to what they called officials' needlessly harsh treatment of the prisoner during his nine months of confinement in a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va.

Other potential witnesses include a military psychiatrist who examined Manning at Quantico, and the former commander of the confinement facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to which Manning was later moved.

Manning faces 22 counts, including aiding the enemy, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. He is charged with sending Wikileaks hundreds of thousands of classified war logs and diplomatic cables.

Obama and Romney together: Chili, not chilly

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three weeks after the election, Mitt Romney made it to the White House.

For about 90 minutes. After an odd arrival in which a man rushed his SUV and ended up getting arrested by the Secret Service.

It wasn't the start of a term as Romney had envisioned. But it was, at least, all on good terms with the man who defeated him, President Barack Obama.

Over a private lunch on Thursday, Obama and Romney had some white turkey chili, Southwestern grilled chicken salad and ? from the reports of it ? the kind of actual conversation that never happens while two presidential nominees are bashing each other's ideas during a campaign.

They shook hands in the Oval Office. They spoke of American leadership in the world. They pledged to keep in touch. Maybe even work together.

All that, at least, according to a White House statement about what happened behind closed doors. The two men themselves never faced reporters.

"Each man wanted to have a private conversation," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. "They didn't want to turn it into a press event."

Much has happened already in American politics since the Nov. 6 election, when voters ended a fierce presidential race by choosing Obama in convincing fashion. Romney is among those who have opined on why he lost, telling donors Obama won by giving "gifts" to groups like Latinos, blacks and young voters.

Carney said that comment, widely panned as disparaging by leaders of both parties, did not hang over the postelection meeting of the two men.

The spokesman underscored Obama's interest in listening to Romney's ideas.

Obama presumably did so without accusing his former rival of having "Romnesia" about his own positions, as the president had once charged with a wicked smile.

Long gone too, it seemed, was Romney's accusation over the summer that Obama was running a "campaign of division and anger and hate."

"Gov. Romney congratulated the president for the success of his campaign and wished him well over the coming four years," the White House statement said.

And this: "They pledged to stay in touch, particularly if opportunities to work together on shared interests arise."

Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom agreed that it was a "very friendly lunch" between two men who spoke about the big challenges facing the nation.

Still, Romney did not get the warmest of welcomes coming into the White House gates.

The Secret Service said a man interfered with his vehicle as it arrived at a secure checkpoint near the White House. The man was later interviewed by an officer and became combative, the Secret Service said. He was charged with assault on a police officer and unlawful entry.

As for the meeting that followed, aides familiar with both sides said it amounted to political symbolism and a promise kept but that it had no substantive or specific agenda. Obama had told the watching world on election night that he would sit down with Romney in the weeks ahead.

That they did, in the dining room just off the Oval Office.

As much as the bitter campaign consumed 2012, it faded remarkably quickly. Obama is in a fiscal fight with Congress, with the economy at stake.

Romney has largely disappeared from the public eye.

Republican officials said they had little expectation the meeting would produce any meaningful results. They said that while Romney was the face of the GOP for much of the year, he did not command enough following among the party's passionate voters or chattering class to maintain a leadership role going forward.

The same is not true of Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who also met privately with Romney in Washington on Thursday.

Latest Social Casino And Betting Releases | Social Gaming News

Peter Amsel

trophy-vegas-doubledown-gamblino-poker-smashCarey DiJulio, GM of Big Fish Games? Big Fish Casino, which recently inked a deal with Betable to offer real-money versions of its social casino games, told Social Casino Intelligence that ?real-money betting was a way of enhancing the experience for our players, and helping create the experience of playing in a real casino.? DiJulio said Big Fish had chosen Betable?s bolt-on backend for its ?very easy integration process? and was right chuffed to be positioned to take advantage of ?a time when the traditional gaming and real-money gambling markets are beginning to converge.?

Further evidence of that convergence comes via the launch of Trophy Vegas, the real-money version of Facebook social casino app Trophy Slots, on the Isle of Man-licensed Cash Ball Network. Trophy Vegas offers games from Microgaming, Next Gen Gaming and NYX to players in jurisdictions in which such real-money activity won?t result in jackbooted law enforcement types kicking your door down. Cash Ball marketing maven Louise Cary said her outfit?s ?proprietary monetization and marketing platform? offered a ?unique opportunity? to meld two revenue streams ?while maximizing player value and satisfaction across both channels.?

Convergence is moving in reverse over at DoubleDown Casino, the social gaming offshoot of gaming device maker International Game Technology. DoubleDown has just released the free-play mobile version of IGT?s popular Cleopatra slot for iOS, Android and Amazon?s Kindle Fire. It?s the second of IGT?s land-based slot titles to make the jump to DoubleDown?s mobile offering following September?s Da Vinci Diamonds release.

There are a few social gaming products in which the monetary rewards are purely virtual, such as Gamblino, the iOS app scheduled for release Nov. 30. Co-founder Frank Wilson said the idea for Gamblino came about ?because there was no viable application out there that allowed friends to place and track friendly bets with each other.? True, if you discount this one, or these ones, or these. But Gamblino differentiates itself in that it offers the chance to play in participating sports bars, with the best player in each bar on a given NFL or NCAA football Sunday or Saturday earning free drinks or food (which is almost as good as real-money). Interested proprietors are invited to sign up for the service at Gamblino.com.

Finally, popular Xbox Live Arcade title Poker Smash has gone mobile. For the uninitiated, the game is essentially Tetris with playing cards in lieu of building blocks, and the rows are eliminated when the cards line up to make various poker hands. The app is currently available on the iOS platform, and developer Void Star Creations is cagey about when an Android version may arrive.

Riots injure 177 in central Tunisian town

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? A strike in a low income region of Tunisia has degenerated into a second day of clashes between police and protesters, leaving 177 people injured, including some seriously, a hospital official said Wednesday.

A local labor union organized a general strike in Siliana, a poor town in Tunisia's interior, on Tuesday to protest a lack of jobs and government investment. Witnesses say police violently dispersed a peaceful march to the city hall for the second day in a row.

"A climate of panic, tension and fear has gripped the region," said Iyadh Dahmani, the area's representative in legislative assembly. He denounced the use of tear gas and shotguns by police to disperse the demonstrators.

The Interior Ministry, however, maintained that police only moved against the demonstration when they attacked city hall and threw stones at security forces.

Nejib Sebti, one of the organizers of the original strike on Tuesday, said that more than 10,000 people rallied peacefully in front of city hall calling for more local development.

"Egged on by the governor who rejects any dialogue, security forces reacted in a manner even more brutal than the repression of Ben Ali," he said, referring to the president overthrown by Tunisians in January 2011.

Since the fall of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the Tunisian economy has suffered and the country has been wracked by demonstrations and strikes as people protest the lack of jobs.

On Tuesday, the World Bank approved a $500 million loan to help support reforms in Tunisia's financial sector to encourage investment and growth.

Tunisia's revolution, which sparked similar uprisings across the region, began in the impoverished interior of the country, which suffers in comparison to the more affluent coast.

Dr. Aymen Aissa of the local hospital told The Associated Press that 177 people had been treated at the hospital with 22 sent to the capital Tunis for further treatment ? including some with eye injuries.

The hospital had reported 14 people injured in clashes Tuesday.

In addition to more jobs, demonstrators are also calling for the resignation of the government, a member of the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party that dominated last year's elections, and the release of 14 jailed activists.

There have been reports of similar demonstrations in other local towns in the area.

Nokia To Block BlackBerry Phones - Business Insider

Calling to mind the patent dispute between Apple and Samsung, Nokia is now seeking to block the sale of pretty much all of RIM's BlackBerry line, reports Computerworld.

Nokia is arguing that it has a patent on the ability to join a wireless network and that RIM's devices infringe on that.

Specifically, Nokia says that RIM "is not entitled to manufacture or sell products compatible with the WLAN standard without first agreeing with Nokia on the royalty to be paid for its manufacture and/or sale of subscriber terminals compatible with such standards."

WLAN, or wireless local-area networking, is better known as Wi-Fi. While some older RIM phones like the BlackBerry Storm lacked Wi-Fi, it's pretty much standard in recent models.

RIM and Nokia signed a patent deal in 2003, but Nokia argued that the patent in question wasn't covered by that deal. The dispute went to arbitration, and Nokia's now trying to enforce the result of that arbitration, according to Computerworld.

Microsoft CEO defends its innovation record, financial results

BELLEVUE, Washington (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer defended his company's record on innovation and financial performance at the annual shareholders' meeting, but conceded that he should have moved faster to get into the booming tablet market dominated by Apple Inc's iPad.

Bill Gates, co-founder and now chairman of the world's largest software company, was one of the first to champion tablet-sized devices more than 10 years ago, but Microsoft failed to come up with a product that worked as well as the iPad. Gates was silent throughout the meeting, attended by about 450 shareholders.

"We're innovating on the seam between software and hardware," said Ballmer, asked why his company had fallen behind rival Apple. "Maybe we should have done that earlier."

A month ago, Microsoft launched the Surface tablet - its first own-brand computer - but has not revealed sales figures.

In the tablet market, "we see nothing but a sea of upside," Ballmer said, an acknowledgement that until now Microsoft has effectively had zero presence in the tablet market.

"I feel pretty good about our level of innovation," he added.

Ballmer said smartphones running Microsoft's new Windows software were selling four times as much as they did at this time last year. Microsoft has never given sales numbers of Windows phones, primarily made by Nokia, Samsung and HTC.

Windows currently has 2 to 4 percent of the global smartphone market, according to various independent data providers. Its overall market share will not likely grow in proportion to its own sales, given that sales of other smartphones - mostly running Google's Android system - are also growing quickly.

Ballmer, flanked by Gates and Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein, was asked by several shareholders to explain Microsoft's lackluster share price, which has been stuck for a decade, and has been outperformed by Apple and Google Inc stock in recent years.

"I understand your comment," he told one shareholder. He went on to explain that Microsoft had "done a phenomenal job of driving product volumes" and was focusing on profiting from that growth.

He suggested that whether investors recognized that value at any given time was out of his hands.

"The stock market's kind of a funny thing," he said, adding that Microsoft had handed back $10 billion in dividends and share buybacks to investors in the last fiscal year.

Several shareholders at the meeting in Bellevue, an upscale suburb of Seattle, complimented the executives on how they had grown and managed the company.

Microsoft's shares rose almost 18 percent during fiscal 2012, which ended in June of this year, compared with a 3 percent rise in the Standard & Poor's 500.

Despite such fluctuations, Microsoft's shares stand around the same level they did 10 years ago.

Finding who hosts a domain name - Web Hosting Talk

The easiest way is to find the registrar as above, sign up for a free account with the registrar, then ask your ex-colleague to push the domain name to your account there.

I understand life's not always that simple. You might have to remind him that theft is a crime that police prosecute. You might even be able to get a nice copper to have a chat with him if it comes to that. If even that doesn't work you might be able to get a mean one to talk to him.

As techhive said, the registrar will probably sort if for you if necessary as well. It would help if you have proof that the name was originally bought with company funds (credit card receipt, etc).

I don't understand that some people think the web is outside the law (or that they can leave their morality at the login screen).

Mughal India: Art, Culture and Empire, an exhibition examining one of the most powerful and opulent empires the world has ever known

This content requires the Adobe Flash Player. Get Flash

08/11/2012

  • 9 November 2012 ? 2 April 2013

The British Library's major new exhibition, looks for the first time at the entire 300 year reign of one of the most powerful and opulent empires the world has ever known. Mughal India: Art, Culture and Empire not only traces the evolution of Mughal art and empire between the 16th and 19th centuries, exhibiting over 200 exquisite paintings and objects, but will shed light on daily life at court with newly discovered and beautifully illustrated manuscripts drawn from the Library?s outstanding Central and South Asian collections. www.bl.uk/mughalindia

Curated by Dr Malini Roy, Curator of Visual Arts at the British Library, Mughal India reveals a new perspective on the rich cultural heritage of the Mughal court. From the eclectic line of emperors themselves, to their impact on art, science, politics and religion, visitors will be drawn into a long-diminished world of extravagance through incredible objects: from a jewelled flywhisk, imperial portraiture and imposing warrior armour, to domestic manuals, early cookbooks and personal memoirs.

On display are highlights including:

  • A Panorama of Delhi by Mazhar ?Ali Khan (1846)

This five metre long painting showing a panorama of Delhi was drawn from the viewpoint of the southern exterior tower of the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort. This 360-degree overview provides a pictorial record of the local area and the Mughal city and palace complex just 10 years before many of the interior buildings were damaged or completely destroyed in the aftermath of the Uprising of 1857. Visitors will be able to see the palace as well as the Chandni Chowk, now a busy tourist drag.

  • Instructional poem for pigeon-fanciers by Valih Musavi (1788)

Displayed for the first time is the ?Book of Pigeons? or Kabutarnama, containing two treatises on pigeons and their care and breeding. The first, in verse, has several illustrations. On the right hand page the foreground and background form separate scenes. One pigeon is drinking from a metal dish; behind are five more, two of which are ?kissing? on an urn. Another picture shows birds of various colours, and chicks in nesting-boxes. On the left page are two sets of white pigeons. The Mughal emperors, especially the later ones, were great fliers of pigeons and had pigeon-houses erected in the courtyards of the Red Fort.

  • Mid-17th century Mughal cavalryman and horse armour

On loan from the Royal Armouries is incredible Mughal armour for a cavalryman and horse. The cavalry wore mail and plate armour (zereh bagtar) with helmets (kolah zereh), and they also carried a cane shield (dhal), while their horses were often protected by mail and plate armour (bargustawan). They were armed with a sword and composite bow, and some additionally used a lance, mace (gurz) or saddle axe (tabarzin). The mail and plate coat is dated 1086 AH (1675/6). The helmet, body armour, horse armour and stirrups are all original armour.

  • The Notebook of Fragrance (1698)

On display for the first time, this is the unique manuscript of a handbook on aspects of household management and activities, reflecting the more cultivated side of the Mughal lifestyle. In seventeen chapters the unknown author discusses subjects as diverse as recipes for perfumes and soaps; meals and drinks; arranging a house and garden; how to fit out a library; weights and measure; fireworks; and games of chance. It was intended for princes, great amirs, and senior administrators ? including Hindus as well as Mughals ? in Shah Jahan's new imperial capital at Delhi.

  • Muhammad Shah making love (c. 1735)

Muhammad Shah was known as ?Rangila? (pleasure-loving), and artists often depicted him celebrating festivals or displaying his exceptional skills as a sportsman. This provocative image of Muhammad Shah explicitly engaged in a sexual encounter sharply deviates from traditional portraits of emperors at leisure. By one of the most influential artists of period, it reveals the emperor?s illusions or confessional thoughts. Surely only the emperor himself could have directed such a portrayal.

  • The Ex-King of Delhi, Bahadur Shah II, awaiting trial (May 1858)

This is the only documented photograph of Bahadur Shah (1775-1862), the last Mughal emperor. The photo was taken in May 1858, while the British held him in Delhi waiting his trial for his part in the Uprisings and shows the emperor reclining on a charpoy and smoking a hookah. It was, apparently, common practice for Europeans to visit the ex-ruler in captivity. In January 1859, Bahadur Shah was brought before a British military court and, after a trial lasting two months, was found guilty on 29 March 1859 of abetting the mutineers; he was later sentenced to exile in Rangoon, where he died in 1862.

  • Journal of the ambassador Sir Thomas Roe (c. 1616)

Sir Thomas Roe?s was the first mission to achieve any diplomatic success for the British in Mughal India. As King James I?s ambassador acting for the East India Company he was presented to the emperor Jahangir in Ajmer on 10 January 1616.
His journal entry for this date is displayed here. Roe travelled with Jahangir?s court to Mandu before taking his leave in 1618 having gained significant trading privileges. Roe found Jahangir ?very merrie and joyfull? and his diary gives a vivid account of life at court. This volume was copied for Roe by his secretary Edward Heynes in India.

Malini Roy, curator of the exhibition, comments: ?We are so pleased to be displaying these stunning and rare manuscripts, paintings, and jewelled objects, shown together for the first time. The exhibition will give visitors a fascinating overview of a relatively little-known dynasty, displaying newly discovered royal portraits and manuscripts, as well as iconic artworks, such as the Panorama of Delhi. It is with great pleasure that we are able to share our collection?s beauty and these fantastic loaned objects with a wider audience.?

Mughal India is accompanied by an exciting programme of events, launching with Late at the Library: Mughal Nites, in association with South Asian Literature Festival, tomorrow evening, an extraordinary night of music, performance and spectacle. Joining DJ Ritu, hosting a Kuch Kuch party, will be British Library artist-in-residence Christopher Green, mehndi artists from Ash Kumar and dancers from Nutkut, weaving amongst installations, demonstrations, a bar and an Indian street food market. Other events will include speakers such as Pankaj Mishra, Mimi Khavati and William Dalrymple.

The British Library is also be running a Learning programme alongside the exhibition, including free in-gallery workshops for Primary and Secondary school groups and conferences for teachers and events in partnership

A beautiful book accompanies the exhibition, co-authored by J. P. Losty (Head of Visual Arts at the British Library for 34 years before retiring in 2005) and curator Malini Roy, featuring glorious reproductions of the finest works of Mughal art in the British Library?s collections.

Mayor to announce plans for homeless day center downtown

Timothy J. Gibbons

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown wants to put a homeless day center at the City Rescue Mission?s downtown location, an announcement that could be made as early as Thursday.

A number of details still have to be worked out about the site, including what type of staffing would be needed, how much space the center would need, what improvements have to be made to the building and who would pay for it all.

Still, a day center would fit in well with the mission?s long-term focus on helping homeless people with chemical dependencies, Executive Director David Bugher said.

?If we can be helpful in this way, we?d be very happy,? he said.

City Hall would not confirm if it had picked a site or when it might make an announcement. Spokesman David DeCamp would only say the city was ?making progress.?

Several people involved with homeless advocacy issues, though, said they expect a news conference Thursday.

Setting up such a center ? which only would be open during the day and would provide access to things like showers, washing machines and service providers ? has long been a goal of Brown. He promised during the campaign for the office to set up a center by year?s end.

?A day center is one of the key strategies from a national model for ending homelessness,? said Carolyn Hillhouse-Jones, who handles homeless issues for the 39-church Interchurch Coalition for Action, Reconciliation and Empowerment, known as ICARE. ?It?s not the only strategy, but it?s an important piece.?

ICARE has long pushed for a day center and it was to that group that Brown made his promise.

Such a center has practical benefits as well as humanitarian ones, Hillhouse-Jones said, including cutting down on misdemeanor arrests and helping homeless people know more about programs that can help.

The success of the center will be judged on two criteria, said Dawn Gilman, executive director of the Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition of Northeast Florida: Does it increase people connecting with services and does it decrease arrests?

Brown reiterated last month that he still was aiming for a December opening, although his office acknowledges that having a site up and running by then will be difficult.

The administration ran into some opposition last month when residents of the Springfield neighborhood heard the city was looking at the nearby old Armory building as a site for the center. At a meeting of community residents, Brown promised the center would be downtown, but not near the historic neighborhood.

City Rescue Mission, which has been around since 1946, fits that desire, as does the organization?s experience in dealing with homeless-related issues, something advocates say is key to success.

During the decades it has been operating, Bugher said, the mission has focused on helping homeless people deal with the root causes of their situation; the day center would widen the number of people it can help do so.

?We want that day center to be used to help more people gain self-sufficiency,? Bugher said. ?We?re not interested in having a day center make homelessness more comfortable.?

PFT: Problem with NFL's year-round Adderall ban

John HarbaughAP

The Ravens are 9-2, but it hasn?t been an easy season.? Apart from key injuries and periodic ineffectiveness and a defense that ain?t what it used to be, coach John Harbaugh had to deal with an unexpected uprising last month.

The moment came, according to Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, on Halloween morning.? Back from a bye-week break after a backbreaking loss to the Texans, Harbaugh told the team that they?d be practicing in full pads.? Several veteran players openly challenged their head coach.

?It was practically a mutiny,? a Ravens player told Silver.? ?It came very close to getting out of control. But the way Coach Harbaugh handled it was amazing.? He let people have their say, and he listened, and he explained himself, and pretty soon it was like a big group-therapy session.? In the end, a lot of positive things were said.? We didn?t practice in pads, but we came out of there stronger as a group.?

Coincidentally (or not), the Ravens haven?t lost since then.

?I?ve never seen a head coach handle anything like that as well as he did,? a Ravens assistant who attended the meeting told Silver.? ?There were some things said where we were like, Damn.

?A lot of coaches would have acted like dictators and been very sensitive about the way their authority was being questioned.? John said, ?Hey, let?s talk about this.?? He showed great leadership.? Instead of worrying that it would make him seem weak, he turned it into a strength.?

Harbaugh realizes the value of encouraging players to speak their mind.

?I wasn?t threatened by it,? Harbaugh said.? ?That?s the main thing.? And, you know, they had some good points, and I had some good points.? Other guys stood up and said some great things.? To me, it embodied everything that you should have on a team.

?The point was that, we have what I call ?Open Mic,? and we can all say anything that we need to say and have to say. You know then that you?re responsible ? when you say it, everybody?s gonna hear it, so you?d better make it your best stuff.

?That brings out the best.? Otherwise, it?s ?Why are they sneaking around talking behind corners??? You know what I mean?? If you?ve got something, you put it right out here in front of me.? I?m man enough to handle it.? If you?re right, then you?re right!? It?s OK to be right.? But more important it?s OK to be wrong.? And it?s OK for me to be wrong, too.?

By being willing to admit that he?s wrong and make changes, Harbaugh could be poised to take his team right to the Super Bowl.

In fact, the only thing Harbaugh may have done wrong in this episode is to let it be known what happened.? Now, other coaches facing similar challenges may opt not to be hardheaded, which could help their own teams play better, possibly when playing the Ravens.

5 healthy hot cocoa recipes | MNN - Mother Nature Network

If there were a contest for the most comforting thing in the world, hot cocoa would surely be in the running for the crown, along with teddy bears, cozy sweaters and the occasional brandy-filled flask. Hot cocoa warms a winter-chilled body, incites nostalgic reverie, and has the ability to hit the spot like few other libations. And beyond that, as counter-intuitive as it may sound, it can be abundantly healthy ? as in, possessing three times more antioxidants than green tea! (Get the whole skinny here: 7 health benefits of drinking hot cocoa.) Hot cocoa is one of the best ways to get chocolate?s antioxidants, but unless you are using a healthy recipe, the benefits of cocoa?s powerhouse nutrients can be negated by the ill effects of too much sugar and a host of synthetic ingredients.

?

The main ingredient in most commercial hot cocoa mixes is sugar, followed by corn syrup, with actual cocoa hiding somewhere in the middle of the list of disturbingly polysyllabic ingredients. In fact, a look at the nutrition panels of the most popular brands reveals a whole hodgepodge of ingredients that just have no business being in a simple cup of cocoa. Case in point? Hydrogenated coconut oil, partially hydrogenated palm oil, gelatin, artificial flavor, sodium hexametaphosphate, blue 1, dipotassium phosphate, sodium aluminosilicate, sucralose, sodium phosphate, and acesulfame potassium, to name a few. Who wants a hot cup of that?

?

In the United States, the terms hot cocoa and hot chocolate seem to be used interchangeably, but there actually is a difference. Hot cocoa is made by dissolving cocoa powder in a hot water or milk, while hot chocolate involves melting a piece of chocolate into the hot liquid. Drinking chocolate, which is often what hot chocolate is called in Europe, is the same as hot chocolate. Hot chocolate yields a richer drink than hot cocoa because chocolate has cocoa butter in it, so there is more fat. Cocoa powder has the fat removed, so it?s a healthier way to get the all the salubrious nutrients which chocolate offers ? but with these recipes there is no richness sacrificed.

?

In all of the recipes here you can play around with the proportions, adding more or less sweetener as you prefer ? and you can also mix and match the milks, as these were developed so that either dairy or nut milks could be used. All of these will yield one regular or two small servings, you can double or quadruple as desired.

?

1. Traditional Hot Chocolate

This is the only one of the group here that includes chocolate pieces, which as mentioned before creates a beverage with more fat. That said, this recipe will yield a beautiful cup of hot chocolate that will still be better for you than a chemical- and preservative laden cup made from a crummy instant mix.

?

1 cup milk (or nut milk)
1/2 vanilla bean, split
3 ounces semisweet or milk chocolate, cut into small pieces

?

Heat milk to scalding in a medium saucepan, add vanilla, and let steep with the heat off for 10 minutes. Strain and return milk to saucepan to reheat milk. (You can use 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract instead and skip the steeping process.) Whisk in chocolate until melted and frothy. Serve, savor.

?

2. Dried Plum Cocoa
Okay, okay. Yes, you could call this one the ?hot prune smoothie,? but we?re going to stand by it anyway. After all, if the French can make Pruneaux d?Agen (the decadent prune and chocolate cake) then we can make pruneaux d? cocoa, by golly. (We?re just going to follow the lead of the prune industry and rename it dried plum cocoa.) The truth is, this one is so thick and rich it?s closer to drinking chocolate, and instead of sugar?s empty calories, you get a healthy dose of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

?

1 cup almond milk (or regular milk)
3 medium plums
2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder
1 pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

?

Put all ingredients in the blender and puree until very smooth, gently heat in a pot on the stove. Voila.

?

3. Coconut Hot Cocoa
Somehow, mixing the products of a tropical tree ? coconut milk and dates ? just seems all wrong for making the perfect drink for a blizzardy afternoon. And it?s true this one may not be the best if you?re considering food miles. But for dairy-free, sugar-free, nut-free diets this recipe may be as close as you get to cocoa nirvana. And for anyone else, if you?ve got the ingredients, this version is super salubrious and delicious.

?

3 tablespoons canned coconut milk
3/4 cup water
3 soft pitted Medjool dates
1 tablespoon cacao powder
Dash of cinnamon

?

Put all ingredients in the blender and puree until very smooth, gently heat in a pot on the stove. Sip and dream of the tropics.

?

4.?Maple Cocoa

Maple syrup is one of a wholesome-cooking cook?s best-kept weapons in avoiding refined sugar. It not only adds a punch of sweetness, but that special almost-smoky maple taste adds incredible depth to baked goods and sweets that are hearty in flavor (meaning, great with chocolate and nutty things, not so good for angel food cake). This one is nice with the neutral flavors of regular dairy, but you can use any alternative milk you?d like as well.

?

1 cup milk
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 pinch of salt

?

Combine ingredients in a medium pot and warm on medium-low heat, whisking until frothy and hot.

?

5. Mexican Hot Cocoa
The original chocolate beverage lauded by the Mayans was a bitter spicy slurry drunk cold and nothing like the Swiss Miss we have come to rely on. Hot cocoa in Mexico and other southern realms retains the heat, which is very clever since chocolate and spice go together as well any pair of flavors possibly could.

?

1 cup?soy milk (or regular milk)
1 tablespoon?Sucanat (see note)
2 tablespoons?cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon?vanilla extract
1 pinch of salt
1 pinch of cinnamon
1 pinch (or more, go crazy!) of cayenne

?

Combine ingredients in a medium pot and warm on medium-low heat, whisking until frothy and hot. Say "salud" to the Mayans for bringing us drinkable chocolate.

?

Note: Sucanat is the trade name for ?Sugar Cane Natural,? a non-refined cane sugar that is made by crushing sugar cane, extracting the juice then heating and drying it. It?s a more wholesome sweetener than refined sugar ? but if you don?t have it, agave syrup, stevia, or regular sugar can be used instead.

NFL Rumors: Could The Minnesota Vikings Sign Alex Smith In The Offseason?

    Derick Hingle-US PRESSWIRE

It certainly has been an interesting NFL career for San Francisco 49ers?quarterback Alex Smith. From being drafted #1 overall in 2005 by the 49ers, through virtually annual changes in offensive coordinator to finding a head coach that believed in him in Jim Harbaugh. Even through San Francisco?s apparent interest in Peyton Manning last off-season, Smith persevered?and signed a three-year deal with the 49ers to remain the?team?s starting quarterback.

But he suffered a concussion in Week 10 against the St. Louis Rams,?which?opened the door for 2011 second-round pick Colin Kaepernick to start Week 11 against the Chicago Bears. Kaepernick performed well enough (16-for-24 for 243 yards and two touchdowns) in that game to earn another start this past Sunday against the New Orleans Saints?despite the fact Smith was cleared to play.

Kaepernick looks likely to remain the 49ers? starting quarterback for the rest of the season as long as he stays healthy and continues to perform well, and there?s a good chance he?ll enter 2013 as at least part of a competition for the starting job. That clearly puts Smith?s future in San Francisco in doubt, and the fact he is due his full $7.5 million base salary for next season if he is on the roster next April 1 may be enough for the 49ers to release him. It can be expected multiple teams would have interest in?Smith if he were available.

The Minnesota Vikings?have a starting quarterback in place with second-year man Christian Ponder, who has had some ups and downs this season in his first full year as a starter. His best games this season have come when he has avoided turnovers and effectively ?managed the game?, but some bad moments at inopportune times have prevented the Vikings from being able to keep pace in some other games. It?s hard to give a fair evaluation of Ponder from the outside looking in due to the lack of talent Minnesota has at wide receiver, but at some point all quarterbacks have to be able to overcome adverse situations.

Smith has been the quintessential game manager over the past two seasons, completing just over 64 percent of his passes and throwing just 10 interceptions in 25 starts over that span. He also has a?19-5-1 record as a starter over the past two regular seasons as the 49ers? have largely relied on a competent running game and one of the league?s top defenses to win games. In a lot of ways Smith has become the type of quarterback Ponder should aspire to be, given that the Vikings are built similarly with one of the league?s best running backs in Adrian Peterson and a defense that has some recognizable veterans.

As we have learned this season around the league, having a competent backup quarterback has become essential no matter how good a team?s starting quarterback is. Signing Smith next off-season would put the Vikings in a position of strength in that regard,?with?the residual benefit of forcing the team?s offensive coaches to find other ways to use current backup quarterback Joe Webb. The big question is if Vikings? general manager Rick Spielman?will be willing to alter his plan at quarterback and bring in legitimate competition?or a potential replacement for Ponder.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

What edition of Windows 8 will I receive when I upgrade?
Windows 8 Pro (Upgrade) is included for the retail promotion.

Are Windows 7 touch-enabled PCs compatible with Windows 8?
If you have touch input hardware that isn't specifically designed for Windows 8, but is compliant with Windows 7 certification, you will experience touch responsiveness at least as good as it was on Windows 7. Because Windows 8 touch requires a higher degree of responsiveness and precision, Windows 8 certified touch PCs provide a much better experience typing on the on-screen keyboard and using certain controls than on Windows 7 certified PCs. For example, touchscreens that support fewer than five simultaneous touch points cannot enable certain Windows 8 features and applications.

Is Windows Media Center included in the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro?
If you want to install Windows Media Center, you need to purchase the Windows 8 Media Center Pack after you upgrade to Windows 8 Pro through the Add features to Windows 8 wizard.

Will DVD playback work after upgrading?
If you already have third-party playback software, the Windows Upgrade Assistant helps determine if this software is compatible with Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows 7, you will have the option to keep this software during the upgrade to Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you will need to reinstall it. Otherwise, you will need to acquire third-party playback software after the upgrade to play DVDs. Alternatively, you can acquire the Windows 8 Media Center Pack or the Windows 8 Pro Pack after the upgrade. Both packs include Windows Media Center, including the ability to play DVDs.

What is the minimum screen resolution for Windows 8?
To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768. You also need this screen resolution to run the apps built in with Windows 8. To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1360 x 768.

Is there a limit to the number of upgrades I can purchase?
The promotional price is limited to a maximum limit of five upgrades per customer.

Why is there a limit of five upgrades per customer?
This is a consumer promotion on individual PCs and for non-commercial purposes. The installation process and media is designed for individuals. Businesses and other organizations can take advantage of other programs that allow upgrades to Windows 8 through Microsoft volume licensing programs.

Biggest black hole blast discovered: Most powerful quasar outflow ever found

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) have discovered a quasar with the most energetic outflow ever seen, at least five times more powerful than any that have been observed to date. Quasars are extremely bright galactic centres powered by supermassive black holes. Many blast huge amounts of material out into their host galaxies, and these outflows play a key role in the evolution of galaxies. But, until now, observed quasar outflows weren't as powerful as predicted by theorists.

Quasars are the intensely luminous centres of distant galaxies that are powered by huge black holes. This new study has looked at one of these energetic objects -- known as SDSS J1106+1939 -- in great detail, using the X-shooter instrument on ESO's VLT at the Paranal Observatory in Chile [1]. Although black holes are noted for pulling material in, most quasars also accelerate some of the material around them and eject it at high speed.

"We have discovered the most energetic quasar outflow known to date. The rate that energy is carried away by this huge mass of material ejected at high speed from SDSS J1106+1939 is at least equivalent to two million million times the power output of the Sun. This is about 100 times higher than the total power output of the Milky Way galaxy -- it's a real monster of an outflow," says team leader Nahum Arav (Virginia Tech, USA). "This is the first time that a quasar outflow has been measured to have the sort of very high energies that are predicted by theory."

Many theoretical simulations suggest that the impact of these outflows on the galaxies around them may resolve several enigmas in modern cosmology, including how the mass of a galaxy is linked to its central black hole mass, and why there are so few large galaxies in the Universe. However, whether or not quasars were capable of producing outflows powerful enough to produce these phenomena has remained unclear until now [2].

The newly discovered outflow lies about a thousand light-years away from the supermassive black hole at the heart of the quasar SDSS J1106+1939. This outflow is at least five times more powerful than the previous record holder [3]. The team's analysis shows that a mass of approximately 400 times that of the Sun is streaming away from this quasar per year, moving at a speed of 8000 kilometres per second.

"We couldn't have got the high-quality data to make this discovery without the VLT's X-shooter spectrograph," says Benoit Borguet (Virginia Tech, USA), lead author of the new paper. "We were able to explore the region around the quasar in great detail for the first time."

As well as SDSS J1106+1939, the team also observed one other quasar and found that both of these objects have powerful outflows. As these are typical examples of a common, but previously little studied, type of quasars [4], these results should be widely applicable to luminous quasars across the Universe. Borguet and colleagues are currently exploring a dozen more similar quasars to see if this is the case.

"I've been looking for something like this for a decade," says Nahum Arav, "so it's thrilling to finally find one of the monster outflows that have been predicted!"

[1] The team observed SDSS J1106+1939 and J1512+1119 in April 2011 and March 2012 using the X-shooter spectrograph instrument attached to ESO's VLT. By splitting the light up into its component colours and studying in detail the resultant spectrum the astronomers could deduce the velocity and other properties of the material close to the quasar.

[2] The powerful out?ow observed in SDSS J1106+1939 carries enough kinetic energy to play a major role in active galaxy feedback processes, which typically require a mechanical power input of roughly 5% of the luminosity of the quasar. The rate at which kinetic energy is being transferred by the outflow is described as its kinetic luminosity.

[3] SDSS J1106+1939 has an outflow with a kinetic luminosity of at least 1046 ergs s?1. The distances of the outflows from the central quasar (300-8000 light-years) was greater than expected suggesting that we observe the outflows far from the region in which we assume them to initially accelerated (0.03-0.4 light-years).
