Shrinkage - And Two Technology Predictions

A family friend who works at a major retailer reported one night over a drink that he had the strangest of days. He made goal (good for him) selling high-end merchandise to individuals he knew in his heart of hearts were thieves using a stolen credit card. Management was called. Security was called. But in the end the transaction approved because that sale would contribute towards the retirement of that day's sales goal. After all, the sales clerk, and his manager, and the store would all get paid. And the thieves would look oh so good in their new duds. Only the credit card company would be taken to the cleaners. 4 out of 5 isn't bad, right? Wrong. And shame on the IT industry for not fixing this.

When we mosey on down to the local mall in search of newer blue jeans, bolder ties and to hasten the onset of the Shoe Event Horizon, we find a curious exchange taking place. People are exchanging the use - just the momentary use - of a small plastic rectangle in exchange for material goods. Yes, credit cards are magical things, enabling us to buy what we want not based on full faith and backing of the US Government (which, these days, may be questionable), but our own good faith and credit. We promise to pay what we owe - sometime later - to get what we want right now. And we agree to pay a rental fee on what we borrowed if we're not prompt in making good on our loan.

But what if the system is broken? If any one party can be put at a disadvantage as part of such transactions? Well, if it were you or I, we'd simply stop using the card and pay using another, or by check or (gasp! It's so old fashioned), cash. And if a store found the paperwork and fees offset the value of handling customers quickly, or if they got ripped off and had to eat the cost, they'd refuse that virtual tender. Or raise their prices to cover the costs.

But what if the party put at a disadvantage was a card issuer? Some giant, soulless bank with a heart as cold as its mortar and brick facade. They deserve it, we say. Couldn't happen to nicer guys. Except that all of us eat that cost each time a fraudulent transaction takes place. We pay with higher interest on our credit accounts and bank fees that nickel and dime us to make up the loss.

So why the interest in this? Because the nature of retail sales hasn't changed much in since the introduction of the credit card. And that has given thieves the opportunity to find weaknesses they can exploit. And it denied us who sell IT solutions the opportunity to provide new and improved systems to capture, in a secure and trustworthy fashion, all those promises traded in for shoes and purses and bling.

But it's worse than just a few stolen goodies, because not all the stakeholders are in on protecting the chain of trust involving the consumer, the retailer and the card insurer.

So I have a few predictions on how this will be fixed:

Prediction 1 - Adoption of Pay-By-Phone. 100% chance of widespread within two years.

This is already widespread in Europe, but to support transactions of greater value, something more could be added. Like taking a picture of the person buying the goods (think facial recognition) or their thumb (think optical fingerprint matching).

Prediction 2 - Adoption of RFID down to the item level. 60% widespread within 2 years.

As the cost of RFID tags continues to shrink, it will become possible to add them to every item of value. Sown into each hem, each collar, each bottle of vitamins and each CD case. And not just the one-bit tags used to sense that something is leaving prior to being paid for, but to track if the item was ever paid for. Some thieves "return" merchandise and ask for store credit, effectively laundering their thefts.

And someone will have to sell all those new point-of-sale systems and scanners. Oh, I do so love the smell of a new opportunity.

92% Midnight in Paris

All Critics (138) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (126) | Rotten (11)

Midnight in Paris is a loving embrace of the city, of art and of life itself.

Our hero has found his groove among the Lost Generation and, for us, there's some amusement to be had in sharing Gil's thrills -- it's like stepping into a Classic Comics version of A Moveable Feast.

Midnight in Paris is charming and clever, at times wickedly astute and hopeful.

There is breezy comedy to be made of a YouTube-age writer meeting the icons and idols of a bygone, classical era, but Allen goes deeper, expanding on his time-travel device to make unexpected and unexpectedly generous observations.

Woody Allen attracts promising players and does nothing with them.

I find this upfront fantasy to be his funniest, most agreeable comedy in years.

Allen in top form with Midnight in Paris.

Woody Allen's most entertaining comedy in years...

Ao abordar a insatisfa??o do protagonista com o presente em fun??o de seu romantismo irrecuper?vel, o veterano diretor garante o sucesso tem?tico de Meia-Noite em Paris.

'Midnight in Paris' is rewarding if not fully satisfying and indicates that, now closer to 80 than 70, the writer-director has found peace with life as he finds it.

This isn't a good Woody Allen movie. No, this is one of the great Woody Allen films.

Let's face it, Woody Allen makes some bad movies or at least only slightly entertaining movies. He might have been great in the past but that day has long gone.

Allen may be a fatalist, as he often claims, but this film is whimsical and romantic-a divertissement that recalls one of his most endearing and original comedies, The Purple Rose of Cairo...

Woody's most inspired comedy in years. Charming, and very enjoyable- even if you're not normally a Woody Allen fan.

Woody's last picture, 2010's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, managed to sneak onto my year-end "10 Worst" list, so color me stunned that Midnight in Paris exudes both charm and cleverness in equal measure.

This comedic masterpiece by one of America's legendary filmmaking geniuses is a fitting companion to "Paris, Je T'Aime" and like a fine wine should be savored by Allen's legion of loyal cinephiles.

Gil still believes in magic and Golden Ages and idolizes the writers and artists of the Lost Generation the way some boys worship Kobe Bryant and Peyton Manning.

Woody Allen's unhurried tribute to the art, passion and power of the written word and to Paris is fabulous. His best film in a decade.

"Midnight in Paris" is a bonbon to ease the craving for Allen's earlier, funnier films.

Though Wilson is considerably younger, blonder, more handsome and more Gentile than the Woody we know, he's somehow a natural in the role anyway.

A charming, lighthearted little lark of a film.

Considering Allen hasn't made an unqualified success since 1999's Sweet and Lowdown, it's easy to shrug off Midnight in Paris' occasional fumble when weighed against so much cleverness and canniness and, bien s?r, irresistible charm.

A clever and fun cinematic postcard that can transport susceptible romantics to the City of Light.

Food Review: SPAGHETTI KITCHEN @ INOX

I sincerely hope that no Italian steps into this restaurant as he/she might either commit suicide or murder after eating the food here

The four of us got a chance to go to a restaurant together after a very long interval. Viggy and I had been thinking of visiting Spaghetti Kitchen since a long time and hence we opted to go here. The place has just one thing to recommend it ? the service.

THUMBS UP 1: The service! The staff were very accommodative and ready to set right every drink and dish that we did not like. But then we did not like most of the stuff served and may be they are used to this reaction many times during the course of the day.

THUMBS UP 2: Pork Chops was the chef?s choice of the day and Viggy was keen to have it. Venkat and he shared a portion and they insisted that it tasted good. I am sure it did.

THUMBS UP 3: The bar-man (if he had had a hand at it) could not quite mess up with the fresh lime soda sweet concoction that Vini and I ordered and it tasted quite normal.?

THUMBS UP 4: Venkat and Vignesh ordered a pizza that they both relished a lot.?

THUMBS DOWN 1: Venkat asked for a Bloody Mary. It tasted funny and the waiter offered to remake it. It tasted as bad and so we asked for a Long Island Iced Tea. I don?t drink, but have tasted Long Island Iced Tea. But never one as bad as the one offered here. Luckily, we could return that too and finally Venkat settled for a straightforward bottled beer that the bar-man could not mess with.

THUMBS DOWN 2: Grissini was the starter that Vini and I ordered. They served 4 sticks of dry bread with four different sauces (????). Never hope to taste something like that ever in my life, thank you.

THUMBS DOWN 3: I don?t remember the dish name, but I had asked for Penne pasta in white sauce. I know that the pasta should be cooked firm and should never be soggy. But the pasta they served me was about 30% cooked. I added a few seasonings to make it taste better, but it just did not. The waiter offered to make it better. Yeah, he did return the dish and the pasta was cooked 40% this time round. Not my dish of pasta!

THUMBS DOWN 4: Vinitha ordered pasta in red sauce. She found the sauce too tangy and looking at her face expression, they offered to make it better with grated cheese. By the time the cheese came, the pasta was quite cold and she left quite a bit of it on her plate without finishing it.

THUMBS DOWN 5: We were shocked to see the huge bill of Rs. 5005 ? this despite their not including the two cocktails that we returned.? Yeah, we had ordered quite a few things, but as regards ?value for money?, it was anything but.?

The Brilliant Legal Mind Behind Mark Cuban's "Fuck You" Brief

Barry Petchesky ?The Brilliant Legal Mind Behind Mark Cuban's "Fuck You" BriefWe had to ask Mark Cuban for comment on today's legal filing, which consisted of a photo of the Mavericks celebrating a title. It's a dagger of a brief in the face of a suit accusing him of mismanaging the team, and it shuts down any comebacks. But Cuban deflected credit, telling us "it was all the lawyers."

So we called Thomas M. Melsheimer, Managing Principal at Fish & Richardson, which is representing Cuban's ownership. With a relationship dating back to the Broadcast.com days, Melsheimer has represented the Mavericks in a half-dozen cases, but none ever provided an opportunity quite like this.

"You don't have that many cases when you're watching television and a game ends, and you think 'wow, this is really great for my lawsuit.'"

The brief was written, signed, and filed by Melsheimer, who wasn't quite willing to endorse our initial characterization of the filing as a "Fuck You" filing. He pondered his choice of adjectives for a moment, and conceded it was "pointed."

Melsheimer says he and his partners took their time choosing the perfect photo for the occasion. Up for consideration: a photo of just the trophy on the podium, a the game 6 box score, and a newspaper headline. They apparently never considered a picture of Mark Cuban taking the Larry O'Brien Trophy into the bathroom.

He's a fan ("you can't be Mark's lawyer without being a Mavs fan"), but he insists today's filing was more than showboating.

"It's a humorous twist," he says, "but it has legal force. It makes a serious point that allegations of mismanagement are ridiculous. A substantial part of our defense is that the Mavericks are successful, and what more obvious success for an NBA team than an NBA championship?"

Coudn't one make the argument that a minority partner's goal is to maximize profit, not to win a title? Melsheimer dismisses that one. "Fundamentally in sports the most valuable franchises are the ones that win," he says. "You build brand loyalty, you build your fan base and you've built a tradition. Winning is the key to doing that. It's a long-term thing, if and Mr. Perot doesn't see that, he's clearly not a basketball guy."

To hear the defense lawyer tell it, Ross Perot Jr. and his Hillwood properties are looking for cash. They took a bath on a real estate deal, and Melsheimer says this lawsuit is an attempt to "intimidate the Mavericks into buying out their share," something Cuban isn't looking to do right now.

Always confident that the suit would be dismissed, Melsheimer saw "another nail in the coffin" each time the the Mavericks advanced in the playoffs. "And after this championship, I'd say this lawsuit has as much chance of succeeding in Dallas as a snowstorm in August."

(Yes, he actually said that. He's from Texas.)

Nurse Jackie Finale Postmortem: Executive Producer Liz Brixius on Luck, Lies and Season 4 (omg!)

[WARNING: The following story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Nurse Jackie. Read at your own risk.]

Somehow, Jackie continues to avoid rock bottom. During this season of Nurse Jackie, she got around a surprise intervention and then flirted with sobriety, though not by choice ? her drug dealer died, Eddie cut her off and her kid's plea for prescription drugs forced her into temporary withdrawal.

But by the end of Monday's Season 3 finale, Jackie's stars had realigned once more: She was still using, yes, but O'Hara was back on her side, she had moved into the power position with Kevin and her all-important career remained intact. Could Jackie be the world's ? or just TV's -- luckiest drug addict?

Nurse Jackie: Has the truth finally caught up with Jackie?

Executive producer Liz Brixius says yes and no: "She's Houdini! She's the luckiest addict in the world. But she's not. If you look at the score sheet, if you look at what it's really cost her, she's a f---ing mess. She's like every other addict. She lost her marriage. Her job's in jeopardy. She's compromised everybody around her. Her relationships aren't what they used to be. Just because she's up and running doesn't mean that it hasn't taken a huge toll."

Brixius spoke with TVGuide.com about just how lucky Jackie is, why O'Hara ? and not Kevin ? is the most important person in her life, and why next season, Kelly will be downright dangerous.

Can nothing crush Jackie (Edie Falco)? This season, most of her lies unraveled, and yet she continues to walk the line with both her career and Akalitus (Anna Deavere Smith), and her husband, Kevin (Dominic Fumusa).
Liz Brixius:
That's where we wanted to be by the end of the season. Jackie's overestimated her own strength, but she's not passed out anywhere, she's not peeing in her pants. However, things around her are compromised. She's been able to metabolize a lot of consequences or think she has been able to metabolize them, but her husband was unfaithful. He went someplace else because she's just not there. In Season 2, he said, "I don't know where you go. I don't know where you are in your head, but you're not here." And then, in classic addict fashion, when he says, "Please forgive me," she says "Pack your bags." Jackie had two nooses around her. The first one was her husband closing in. The second was Akalitus ? and she doesn't yet know that Akalitus has saved her.

But, it's a high-wire act and you can't stay up there all the time. It's all about the rush with Jackie. When she was sober, she missed it. She walked through traffic just to feel something. Most people who work in emergency rooms are adrenaline junkies; they live to be on the edge of that life or death cusp. This is a woman who works in the emergency room and is also an addict.

Why did a rule enforcer like Akalitus dump the pee?
Brixius:
At the end, when she dumps the pee, it's basically her having gone through 30 years of being a shill for the hospital, doing everything she could do, and finally saying, "F--- it, I'm taking my nurse's side." It's like she's saying, "You use Coop (Peter Facinelli) as the face for all things. You didn't help me get Michelle Obama in here. You don't help me. So, I'm not going to help you hurt somebody I love."

Actually, we knew that Akalitus dumped the pee before we even started writing Episode 1... That was her arc. We had to have it approved by the network. Then, when the time actually came, they were like, "You cannot have her dump the pee -- then Jackie's off the hook!" We were like, "But Jackie doesn't know she's off the hook. It's going to be awesome!" I was like, "I want Jackie to turn to Kevin and say, 'Pack your bags' while 'Hit the Road Jack' plays and Akalitus walks down a long hallway and dumps it. You've got to let us do it!'"

Jackie seems to be insanely lucky in that way: Even now that the key people in her life, like O'Hara (Eve Best), know that she's got a drug problem, some are willing to help Jackie on her own terms. Where do you see her relationship with O'Hara heading next season?
Brixius: I think because I'm a woman in my 40s and both [executive producer Linda Wallem] and I have been through lots of relationships, we wanted it to be like, she can mess around with Eddie (Paul Schulze) and have it blow up in her face because she's got Kevin. When things aren't good with Kevin, she can fix it. But when things aren't good with O'Hara, we wanted that to break your heart, because O'Hara is something bigger. She's the kind of friend I think we all wish we had. She can look at Jackie in the nonconventional ways and not be trying to get her to go to meetings or forcing her to white-knuckle it. She loves her. She wants her to be OK. She also doesn't have a life -- but she will in Season 4, to answer your question. In Season 3, O'Hara didn't have anything competing for her affection, really.

Are you saying she'll get a love interest?
Brixius: O'Hara bought a townhouse and she probably bought it for a reason... There's not going to be less O'Hara, but there is going to be less availability of O'Hara to Jackie.

What's the story with Kelly (Gbenga Akinnagbe)? We now know he's just as good at lying as Jackie is. Maybe better. What does his presence in the hospital mean for Jackie in Season 4?
Brixius:
Well, I will tell you that you don't know everything there is to know about Kelly Slater. Jackie is not smarter than he is. All we know is that he has successfully pulled the wool over everybody's eyes. To what end and why isn't super important yet, except that we now know he is a force to be reckoned with... What he does is he talks to Jackie honestly about things that O'Hara also does, but she does it out of intimacy. With him, it's more workplace: I see you. I see you. But he has no idea what an addict she is. He does know that neither of them are what they appear to be to everybody else. That's important.

I'll tell you what is M.O. is: He's got a survival mechanism in him that says, "I need you to like me. Whoever you are, whoever I'm in front of, you have to like me. However I can relate to you, I'm going to relate to you." He needs that. He's a chameleon. He's working it. No matter who he's talking to, he's working in it. He's always got an answer ? and that makes him dangerous.

What did you think of the finale?

News And Society ? Easier Information ? Blog Archive ? Solar ...

Posted on June 19, 2011, 4:05 pm, by admin.

It probably will not take much longer considering oil prices before more people start taking a hard look at solar energy. The technology now exists to use solar energy for just about any purpose you can imagine. Constant innovations are being discovered to make solar powered cars more cost effective. However, looking at your house is another story because that is where so much focus has been. The following information on solar energy will be of interest to anyone looking for ways to cut down on their utility bills. Whether you talk about solar energy or a Virgo Scorpio related company ? the emphasis is often on how much power you?ll be able to get out of it.

The strategic gains, meaning long term, associated with solar solutions is the magnet that pulls people toward it. The various outlays are all loaded on the front side, while the strategic benefits are longer-term. But then once in place, then you will immediately begin recouping your costs. You will not have to pay for oil or natural gas with solar power. You could even profit from your venture if you play your cards right. In the event you make extra, you can negotiate a deal with your old electric provider for them to purchase your surplus.

Solar lighting can be installed for security purposes, plus there are other simple uses, too. None of this requires special training, just a willingness to learn and do it. Any type of special lighting can be converted such as security lights. Motion activated solar lights work just like the other kind, and they are great for security. These are easy to install because there are no wires that need to be run. Just like it is possible to get in-depth along with your Virgo Aquarius related enterprise, you go in-depth here too.

One relatively simple way to put more value into your home is through solar additions. By doing so, you will find that it adds something to your home that is highly unique. You can find very easy to install do-it-yourself type panels, and then when it is time to sell people will be duly impressed. It is very much worth the time and cost to install basic solar panels for the simple reasons outlined above.

Never think that you are limited with what you can do using solar energy applications. Solar energy is no longer a fringe or unusual way to heat your home, hot water heater or even your cell phone. People and businesses are actively searching for methods and approaches to reduce the heavy burden of fossil energy sources. Avoid thinking you have no options or choices because that is simply no longer true. Usually focus on solar power just like you?d focus on Virgo Aries.

Iraq hostages 'unlawfully killed'

Left to right: Jason Creswell, Alec MacLachlan and Jason SwindlehurstJason Creswell, Alec MacLachlan and Jason Swindlehurst (l-r) were captured in Iraq in May 2007

An inquest into the deaths of three British security guards in Iraq has found they were unlawfully killed.

Jason Swindlehurst, 38, of Skelmersdale, Lancs, Jason Creswell, 39, of Glasgow, and Alec MacLachlan, 30, of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, were seized in Baghdad in May 2007.

They were unlawfully killed in 2008, Trowbridge Magistrates' Court heard.

A fourth guard seized with them, Alan McMenemy, 34, of Glasgow, is also believed to be dead.

IT consultant Peter Moore, from Lincoln, whom they were guarding, was also seized but released. He was released from captivity in Iraq in December 2009.

The inquest heard that, on 29 May 2007, the four security guards, armed with automatic rifles and pistols, collected Mr Moore and another IT consultant, Peter Donkin, from their accommodation in Baghdad's green zone.

They were escorted to the ministry of finance where the pair were installing a new IT system.

At about 1140 between 50 and 100 armed men dressed in police and military uniforms entered the building and took the four guards and Mr Moore hostage, the court heard.

The bodies of Mr Swindlehurst and Mr Creswell were flown back to the UK by the RAF in June 2009 after being passed to the UK authorities.

The body of Mr MacLachlan was flown back in September of that year.

A Foreign Office spokesman said it believed Alan McMenemy had been killed and efforts were continuing to try to establish his fate.

Pet Care: Where Are Dogs Allowed? A List of Chain Stores | Global ...

By Bianca M. Caraza, Global Animal

When taking pups out for a walk, most people assume that they must drag their furry friends along the same tired path every day, as if routine were somehow required. While people often appreciate a steady routine, no one likes monotony, least of all the tenacious and curious mind of a household pet. Trainers are now recommending that you introduce your dog to new people and places to encourage comfort with strangers as well as stave off boredom. One way of introducing your dog to new environments, and give them a coveted car ride, is to bring them along while running errands and shopping.

This is, of course, easier said than done. If you thought it was difficult having kids along at the salon or drugstore, pets would be murder, right? Not necessarily. Pet owners everywhere are finding that, more often than not, stores are welcoming leashed pups with open arms. In the twenty first century, you don?t have to be a guide dog to enjoy a day at the mall or night on the town.

Stores like Petsmart and Petco have, of course, always enjoyed pets of all kinds roaming down their well-stocked aisles. But where else might a dog or cat stray? While Home Depot was once pet friendly, rules have changed, banning pets of all shapes and sizes. Chains like Starbucks and most restaurants won?t allow pets due to sanitary and health reasons, so a good rule of thumb is to never expect any establishment that serves food to accommodate your beloved pet.

There are, however, several pet-friendly chains. Barnes and Noble booksellers, for instance, welcomes dogs, despite animal illiteracy rates. Anthropologie, Bebe, Bloomingdales, Macy?s, Foot Locker, and Gap (in certain metropolitan areas) all allow dogs to help their caretakers select the most aerodynamic pair of running shoes or flattering dress. Crate and Barrel allows polite pups to shop, as does the Pottery Barn.

Fifth Avenue and Fifty-Seventh Street?s Tiffany?s welcomes diamond-minded dogs to stop in for a shiny treat. And Bergdorf Goodman?s and Polo Ralph Lauren invite canines to accompany their humans for a delightful afternoon stroll through bags and blouse galore.

There are plenty of stores, chain and otherwise, that don?t mind a well-behaved dog trotting down their aisles. The important thing for pet owners who don?t want to leave canine friends behind is to call ahead and make sure that their dog is welcome in a store. Global Animal also encourages caretakers to be considerate?while an individual employee may enjoy your dog, it?s not nice to expect your local caf? to embrace the sanitary and safety risks that come with allowing animals on the premises.

Dogs are highly intelligent and friendly creatures. Along with love and affection, they need a change of scenery every now and then. Having your dog tag along on short trips will give him the experience he?ll need to stay happy and healthy.

Sun Has Giant Supersonic Waves Bigger Than Earth (SPACE.com)

Humongous waves of hot plasma roiling on the surface of the sun appear to be moving at speeds as high as 4.5 million miles per hour, a new study found. The waves are so huge it would take up to 16 Earths, end-to-end, to match them.

It's the first unambiguous evidence that the sun's lower atmosphere contains such superfast "magnetosonic waves," scientists said.

The fast waves have velocities of 2.3 million to 4.5 million mph (1,000 to 2,000 kilometers per second), periods in the range of 30 to 200 seconds, and wavelengths of 62,000 to 124,000 miles (100,000 to 200,000 kilometers), equivalent to stacking between eight to 16 Earths on top of one another. [Amazing New Sun Photos from Space]

Scientists discovered the waves with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), dedicated to observing the sun from orbit around Earth.

Ripples in a pond

Waves on the sun are produced when a flare or eruption on the solar surface kicks up hot plasma, similar to ripples in water produced when a rock is dropped into a still pond.

Scientists have observed slow-moving waves on the sun, but fast-moving waves, which were also predicted by theory, had so far gone undetected because previous space telescopes could not take pictures rapidly enough to image these fast waves.? [Video: Enormous Surfer Waves on Sun Hotter Than Hell]

"They seem to be a common phenomenon," said Karel Schrijver, principal physicist at the Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory in Palo Alto, Calif., in a statement."During the first year of the SDO mission, despite the sun being relatively quiet, we have seen about a dozen such waves. Although their exact trigger mechanism is currently under investigation, they appear to be intimately related to flares that sometimes exhibit pulsations at similar frequencies."?

Enigmatic processes

Waves such as these are believed to be responsible for many fundamental, yet enigmatic processes on the sun, such as heating the corona to millions of degrees, accelerating the solar wind, triggering remote eruptions, and delivering energy and information between different parts of the atmosphere.

By observing these waves, scientists hope to better understand the solar physics of such processes and their consequences on near-Earth space and the terrestrial environment.??

"This discovery and analysis is very significant because we are witnessing phenomena of which we were previously unaware," said Alan Title, principal investigator of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly at the Lockheed Martin lab, who first noticed the fast propagating waves in routine SDO movies."In light of this discovery, the more we look at solar flares, the more of these waves we see, and as observation and analysis lead to insight, the better we will understand the processes involved."

Stanford University scientist Wei Liu, a research associate at the Lockheed Martin laboratory, presented the findings today (June 15) at the annual meeting of the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society in Las Cruces, N.M. The researchers also detail their discovery in a paper to be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Surfer waves on the sun?

Another recent study of waves on the sun found "surfer" waves the size of the United States in the solar corona.

These so-called Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, also discovered using data from SDO, could help astronomers understand how energy moves through the solar atmosphere.

"One of the biggest questions about the solar corona is the heating mechanism," said solar physicist Leon Ofman of NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and Catholic University, Washington. "The corona is a thousand times hotter than the sun's visible surface, but what heats it up is not well-understood. People have suggested that waves like this might cause turbulence which cause heating, but now we have direct evidence of Kelvin-Helmholtz waves."

That research was published online on May 19 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Blogging: A Comprehensive Beginner?s Guide - Social Media in Organizations (SMinOrgs) Community

Blog_mouse_pc_400_clr This blogging beginner's guide is intended for people who want to incorporate blogs into their organization?s social media efforts but aren?t sure where or how to begin. Individuals interested in blogging for personal/career management reasons, as well as folks aspiring to be professional bloggers, may also find the guide useful in helping them get started. The guide focuses on external blogs, but many of the concepts apply to internal blogs as well.

To many professionals blogging is still a foreign concept. Although virtually everyone?s read them and some people may even comment and subscribe, when it comes to thinking about how to leverage the tool themselves, people often freeze. They feel intimidated because they think their writing skills aren?t good enough, pressured by the prospect of having to create fresh content on a regular basis, and/or uncertain of how they?re going to manage the time commitment.

Cyberspace is full of blogging ?best practices,? rules and tips. Many of these guides are great, but they?re not necessarily comprehensive and/or designed for people who are just getting started. Therefore, I thought I?d create my own guide based on my interactions with social media rookies over the past two years, as well as my own experience as a relatively new blogger (since March 2010).

The guide is divided into the following sections:

  • Putting Blogging in Perspective
  • Getting Started
  • Addressing Blogging Elements
  • Creating Content
  • Sharing Content
  • Monitoring and Adjusting

NOTE: At first, some of the advice will not make sense, and many of the terms may sound foreign, but don?t let any initial confusion you may experience deter you. Accept that you?ll have a fairly steep learning curve to climb in the beginning, but trust me when I tell you the steep part is shorter than you think and it?ll all start to make sense more quickly than you realize. Your patience and persistence will be rewarded in due time.

As always, I welcome feedback. If you disagree with one of my recommendations, have a tip to add, and/or feel something was unclear, please feel don?t hesitate to add a comment or question. Thanks!

?

Putting Blogging in Perspective

Most people tend to think of blogging as a relatively recent social media phenomenon, and perhaps as an activity that relatively few individuals/organizations engage in. According to Wikipedia, however blogging?s origins can be traced back to 1994, and as of February 2011, there were 156 million public blogs.

Despite their longevity and ubiquity, however, people have been speculating about the ?demise? of blogging for at least the past four years. One of the latest speculative entries was a February article in the New York Times (NYT), which was based on a recent Pew research report noting the decline of blogging activity among younger generations and a general leveling off in terms of usage. Although the NYT used the term ?wane? in their headline, ?morph? is probably a more apt description. Individual blog hobbyists may be on the decline, but the underlying principles and technology will live on and expand, especially in organizations. In fact, when you consider that many digital news articles and columns function effectively the same way a blog does (i.e., a writer shares a story and/or a perspective, and readers have the ability to comment and engage in dialogue about the post), the total number of de facto blogs is actually on the rise.

Based on my own reading, it seems the most active bloggers in the professional sphere are journalists and individuals/organizations that are immersed in digital technologies. Although there are a number of non-tech organizations that have fairly sophisticated blog sites (e.g., Sears, American Red Cross, William & Mary), active organizational blogs are far from commonplace.

The decision to establish and maintain a blog is not an easy one to make, especially for organizations that have limited resources. Reframing your perspective on blogs, however, can highlight their potential value. Here are a few points that might help:

  • You can blog without being a blogger. We have evolved past the point where blogs are online diaries, places for the expression of individual perspectives and/or (over)sharing the details of our personal or professional lives. They don?t have to be chatty and informal ? or fun or funny ? or snarky ? they can be whatever we need/want them to be.
  • Blogs can (and should) be thought of as long-form news feeds (whereas Twitter streams and status updates on sites like Facebook and LinkedIn are short-form news feeds). Although it?s great to offer personal perspectives, share ideas and solicit feedback, or initiate dialogue, there?s nothing wrong with simply relaying information, offering insights and/or demonstrating expertise.
  • Blogs provide another channel through which to attract and engage clients, prospects, and other stakeholders. They should be viewed as an integral part of an overall communications strategy that complements other outreach efforts rather than a new effort that gets layered on top of them. (Check out Part 7 of the Social Media Primer for guidance on developing a social media strategy.)
  • As a dynamic internet element, blogs can make a significant contribution to a website?s search engine optimization (SEO) results, which can increase the flow of inbound traffic.? Blog posts create more pages that are linked to a website, and those pages have keywords and tags that increase the likelihood they will be found via a search query. As static elements, most web pages aren?t going to be huge traffic drivers, even if they contain the same key words and/or tags. SEO via organic search is a nice complement to ? or substitute for ? paid search results.

?

Getting Started

Your biggest investment in blogging successfully will be time, so you shouldn?t start one until you feel confident you can commit to a reasonable schedule for content updates and maintenance. Once you?ve decided to incorporate blogging into your communication activities, you?ll want to:

  • Pick a blogging platform. Blogging platforms are either free or low cost. You can investigate different options (just search on ?top blogging platforms 2011? to access various assessments), but for most people the choices will boil down to WordPress, TypePad (which is what I use), or Blogger. Do your due diligence, but there?s no need to make the decision process unnecessarily complicated. Note: if you choose WordPress, make sure you understand the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
  • Determine the number of blogs/contributors. Even if you?re planning to have multiple bloggers, it?s probably better to start with a single blog that has multiple contributors rather than separate blogs. Depending on the platform you choose, it?s easy enough to add new blogs later.
  • Integrate your blog and website. You can build a web presence around your blog, but even if the two are separate it?s easy to link them. If possible, add custom design elements to your blog to match the look and feel of your website. If you already have a website you plan to keep, make sure you upgrade it before you start blogging. You don?t want to drive traffic to a site that doesn?t represent you/your organization in the best possible way.
  • Integrate your blog with other communication channels. Develop a basic plan for how your blog posts will be integrated with other communication platforms and channels you may be using, especially digital tools/sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and SlideShare. This plan will identify the where/when/what/how of content sharing and communication flows.

?

Addressing Blogging Elements

You can find many online resources that address various blogging elements, and I encourage you to check them out to gather different perspectives. But don?t let yourself get overwhelmed trying to understand the different options and determine which practices you should follow, especially in the beginning. You need to learn to walk before you can run ? keep things simple at first and develop more sophisticated practices as you gain experience and expertise.

To help get you started, here are my thoughts on the main blogging elements besides content:

  • Posting frequency. It is best to develop a regular schedule for posting, but there are no hard-and-fast rules about how often to post. Remember that quality is more important than quantity and don?t feel pressure to post more frequently than you can manage.
  • Post length. Many people will advise that shorter posts are better. I personally find posts that are too short to be a waste of my time. If I make the effort to follow a link, I want to read something of substance. Of course, I appear to be incapable of writing a short blog post, so perhaps I?m biased! Again, the key is quality ? regardless of length, make sure your posts are valuable to your readers.
  • Post title. This is another aspect on which there are lots of ?how-to? tricks: use numbers, be dramatic, provide checklists? There is some value in these recommendations, but I wouldn?t take them too literally. I?ve read too many ?headlines? that misrepresented the post?s content and/or were unnecessarily inflammatory. Accuracy is more important than excitement.
  • Lead paragraph. I almost never read recommendations about this, but I think the lead paragraph is critically important. In addition to drawing the reader in, it should succinctly summarize what the post is all about.? That summary is what gets listed in search results and when the post is shared via channels like LinkedIn and Facebook, so it needs to be really tight.
  • Images and videos. Some people will recommend having image-rich posts to break up the monotony of the text, but images can be slow to load and may not be worth the effort of trying to include. Videos are similarly appealing and resource intensive. At a minimum, you should aim for one representative image for each post, and include that in the beginning of the post. Like the lead paragraph, this image will show up when the post is shared in certain places, and it?s worth having something that captures the post?s content.
  • Structure. It?s a good idea to make use of headings and other means to highlight key points as much as possible. Readability is also enhanced by short paragraphs and bulleted lists. If the post is long, provide a roadmap or guide in the introduction that gives people a sense of what?s coming.
  • Tagging, keywords, and categories. Tagging and keywords are important from an SEO perspective, but you shouldn?t try to ?game? search results by forcing certain words and/or adding loosely related tags. Focus on the content and allow search engines to uncover the post organically. It works better than many people lead you to believe it does. Categories can also be very useful in terms of content management. By creating topical categories, linking your posts to them, and including a category cloud on your blog page, you provide readers with a way to access similar content. That exposes them to older blog posts, which reinforces and increases the value of your focus and expertise, in addition to contributing to your SEO results.
  • Post timing. I?m very wary of any advice about timing. In spite of the scientific claims some people make, it?s really more of an art, and individual results can vary widely. Plus, although it?s nice to see a spike in web visits after a blog post is published, your focus for sharing content should probably be on the traffic it can drive over the long term rather than the short term. At least initially, timing shouldn?t be a high priority.
  • Post URLs. This is another important topic I don?t see addressed much. I try to create a shortened URL for posts I think I?ll be sharing via email, through commenting on other blog posts, etc. I use the tiny.cc site to create custom URLs that I can remember (e.g., my post about social media policies is http://tiny.cc/SMinOrgsPolicyPost), but there are other services available as well. You can also create your own custom shortener that can help reinforce your brand.
  • Sharing capabilities. Make sure your blog posts are easy to share by including a widget/plug-in like ShareThis or AddThis to your blog page, in an easy-to-spy-and-use spot.
  • Comments. Yes, you should enable readers to share their thoughts and you probably don?t need to pre-moderate them. You?re not likely to be overwhelmed by comments, and the risks from trolls and spammers are pretty low. You may want to create a set of posting guidelines that enable you to manage comments after they?re shared, but for most individuals/organizations, developing guidelines is not critical in the beginning. (See this blog post for more on managing comments in online communities.)

?

Creating Content

Creating content on a regular schedule is one of the most challenging (and daunting) aspects of blogging, but it?s more manageable than many people realize. Here are some ideas than can help:

  • Think expansively about the content you can share through the blog. Some of it can and should be original, but much of it can be repurposed and/or re-leveraged content originating from other sources. You can also repurpose some of your static website content to make it more dynamic.
  • Examples of repurposed content include:
    • Press releases
    • Links to traditional media news stories about your organization and/or in which someone from your organization was interviewed/quoted
    • Organization news
      • Share ?State of? summaries from organizational leaders (e.g., the President?s letter)
      • Announce the latest newsletter and provide a link to it and/or (re)share individual articles
      • Welcome new employees, members, clients, partners, suppliers and/or other stakeholders, and/or share relevant news about them
      • Share relevant operational statistics that you would normally provide publicly (e.g., efficiency improvements, sales milestones, donor thanks)
    • Product and/or facility videos
    • Client testimonials
    • Case studies
    • White papers
  • Examples of original content include:
    • Insights from organizational leaders and other experts about industry trends, client challenges, and other topics related to the products/services you offer (without directly pitching a solution).
    • News digests that contain organizationally-relevant or industry-related content, edited to offer your unique insights (here?s a page that explains how SMinOrgs does it and provides links to examples).
    • Guest posts from industry leaders and experts outside of your organization.
  • When creating original content, remember that quality and integrity matter as much in a blog as they do in any other means of communication you may use. A few critical points:
    • Don?t plagiarize content.
    • Don?t try to ?game? the blogging process just to get a post out. I lose a lot of respect for bloggers whose posts regularly just summarize news/research reports without adding substantive commentary.
    • Be careful about using ghost writers to represent organizational leaders. In blogs especially, people expect a post ?from the President? to in fact be from the president?
    • When you use guest bloggers, make sure their work meets your editorial/brand/ethical standards.

?

Sharing Content

Once you?ve created a blog post, the additional investment of time to share it is relatively minimal. Here are my suggestions for the main channels through which you might push content out in an effort to pull people back to your website:

  • Twitter: tweet out a link at least once. You can schedule multiple tweets if you like, but I would only do that if you have an active Twitter account and/or a lot of followers and are concerned someone might miss a single tweet. If that?s not the case, too many repeated tweets can turn people away (see this post for more Twitter tips). If individual employees also regularly tweet on behalf of the organization, they can tweet out links as well.
  • Facebook: post a link to your fan page if you have one. Individual employees can also share on their own news feeds, but I would only do that if your content is potentially interesting to a wide audience. You may also be able to link your blog posts to your fan page via an automatic feed mechanism, but you?ll still need to share each post to ensure it shows up in people?s news feeds.
  • LinkedIn: ?You can include an RSS feed on your company profile so that anyone who visits it can link back to your blog. You can also have key individuals share blog posts via their own status updates, by messaging people in their networks, and by sharing them with relevant group.
  • Email blasts. You can include a section in your email blasts with links to your latest blog posts. And when you?ve generated enough posts on a specific topic, you could create an email blast that?s focused on them.
  • Newsletters. As with email blasts, you can include a separate section in your newsletters that has links to specific blog posts. You can also repurpose content originally created for the blog as a newsletter article.
  • Other channels. You can leverage a wide variety of general news and blogging platforms, as well as digital professional communities, for driving traffic. This form of distribution can fall into two categories:
    • There are sites such as BusinessWeek?s Business Exchange, Social Media Today, and American Express Open Forum that individuals can join and use to share their own content. Professional communities on sites like Ning provide similar capabilities.
    • You can comment on related FB posts, LI discussion items, blog posts, and news articles written by others, including links back to your own blog posts (this is where the short urls can really come in handy). ??

A few words of caution on sharing:

  • Be careful when you have multiple people sharing the same content. If they have overlapping networks, that could result in ?oversharing,? which could be viewed as spammy. It?s better to stagger their shares, just as you should try to stagger all sharing across different platforms whenever possible.
  • Only share relevant content on news/blogging platforms and via digital communities. If your sharing appears to be indiscriminate, you?ll turn people off and defeat your own purposes.
  • Be respectful of other people?s blogs and articles. In addition to making sure your links are related to the post on which you?re commenting, say a few words that draws the connection rather than simply posting a ?read my post ? here?s the link? comment.

?

Monitoring and Adjusting

After you?ve created/shared your content, you should pay attention to what happens and be prepared to respond accordingly. As with other aspects of blogging, however, you don?t need to over-engineer the process. Here are a few tips on the main things to pay attention to:

  • Analytics. Whether you set up Google analytics or use an analytics tool offered by your blogging platform provider, you should pay regular attention to the quantity and quality of traffic to your blog/website. That feedback is invaluable in letting you know which posts resonated with folks, which outlets drove the most visitors, and other metrics that will help you refine your future blogging activity.
  • Search engine results. These results are important not just from a straight analytics perspective (i.e., how much traffic am I getting from searches), but examining the searches can provide information on important issues like the key words people are using to look for content and where your content is ranked on various results.
  • Number of shares. When you add a sharing feature to your blog posts, you should be able to get statistics about how many times your content is shared by readers. Those counts provide another gauge of popularity, over both the short and long terms.
  • Comments. I?m not a fan of pre-moderation, but many people still do it. Regardless, you?ll want to make sure you regularly monitor comments and weed out the spam and any other posts that don?t conform to guidelines you may have developed. It?s also good form to respond to readers? comments, either individually or in groups. (See this blog post for more on managing comments in online communities.)
  • Grading your blog and website. Hubspot offers free tools for grading your blog and your website. It?s a good idea to take pre- and post-blog website measures, and to regularly monitor your grades. They?re not perfectly scientific and you shouldn?t necessarily strive for perfect scores, but they can be very useful in measuring progress.

?

Conclusion

As always, I welcome feedback. If you disagree with one of my recommendations, have a tip to add, and/or feel something was unclear, please feel don?t hesitate to add a comment or question. Thanks!
