7 Fun and Festive July 4th Recipes for the Whole Family | Food ...

The Fourth of July is one of my favorite times to entertain. Yes, the holiday itself is fun, but I have to be honest--I love the idea of red, white and blue food.

To me, the holiday is a great excuse to make fun things out of fresh, healthy summer berries--which are just about my favorite things on earth.

They also happen to be some of my kid's favorite things.

When we throw parties, or I am cooking with my daughter, we often dream up red, white and blue for things like our pancakes or ice cubes. Sometimes I like to take it one step further and create red, white and blue salads and cakes.

You could spend a small fortune decking out your festive food for the holiday, but there is a way to keep the fun quotient high and the budget quotient low. In fact, if you have a few staples lying around, all of these goodies ring up at $10 or under.

South-South-North Collaboration Will Address Desertification in Africa?s Sahel

21 June 2012: Africa, Brazil and France have launched a scientific collaboration to fight desertification, with a particular focus on the Sahel region. It?aims to integrate information on desertification trends captured through satellite imagery and on-the-ground knowledge and research. It also?will build scientific capacity in Africa, strengthen science-society links and contribute to sustainable management of arid and semi-arid areas of Africa.

The "South-South-North" collaboration was launched on the sidelines of the?UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).?Participating partners stressed the need to urgently address desertification. Idriss D?by, President of Chad, said desertification is affecting millions of people in Africa, and immediate action is required to avoid degradation that would make many parts of African uninhabitable. Michel Laurent, the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) Director-General, emphasized that ?the situation in the Sahel area is continuing to deteriorate," noting that desertification's southward spread is causing many people to migrate.

The tripartite research programme represents the first scientific cooperation programme on desertification in Africa. It is an initiative of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Brazil, IRD in France and the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), which includes 11 African nations.

Prior to its official launch in Rio, several global events highlighted the need for this collaboration. The Fight Against Desertification in Africa conference called for interdisciplinary research on desertification, drought and land degradation in its Declaration of Niamey. At the sixth World Water Forum, partners officially signed an agreement. The collaboration also was?discussed at previous International Conference: Climate, Sustainability and Development in Arid and Semi-arid Regions (ICID) events. [IRD Press Release]

Sudanese Authorities Demolish Two Church Buildings

Compass Direct News reports that authorities in Khartoum demolished two church buildings last week, days after confiscating three Catholic schools, sources told Compass. Officials from the Ministry of Planning and Housing of the local government authority on June 18 sent bulldozers that destroyed a church building belonging to the St. John Episcopal Church of Sudan, in the Haj Yousif area, an area source reported by email. A Catholic church building in the area was also demolished the same day. Clergymen said persecution was intensifying following the secession of South Sudan in July 2011, with officials targeting churches they claim to be associated with now unwelcome, largely Christian southern Sudanese in the Islamic-ruled country. Christian support organization Open Doors reported that the churches were targeted on the pretext that southern Sudanese had attended services, and that since they had presumably left, the buildings were no longer necessary.

DA: No charges in leak of Rihanna beating photo

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Two Los Angeles police officers won't face criminal charges alleging they leaked a photo of pop star Rihanna's bruised and beaten face after she was assaulted by singer Chris Brown, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said.

An internal report by prosecutors says that after a three-year investigation, they didn't have enough evidence to show celebrity news website TMZ paid the accused officers for the photo, and that became an obstacle in charging them.

The Associated Press report obtained a copy of the March 28 report on Thursday after its contents were first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Officers Blanca Lopez and Rebecca Reyes may still get fired. They are slated to appear before disciplinary panels in August.

Brown, who was Rihanna's boyfriend at the time, was arrested on suspicion of beating the Grammy winner on Feb. 8, 2009, leaving her bloody and bruised.

The "Umbrella" and "Only Girl (In The World)" songstress, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, canceled her Grammy performance that year after the incident.

Brown pleaded guilty to attacking Rihanna and was ordered to serve five years on supervised probation and to complete six months of community service including roadside cleanup, graffiti removal and manual labor.

Prosecutors allege the photo was leaked after a stack of photographs of Rihanna's injuries was left lying on a desk at the Wilshire police station and Reyes took a picture of the top photo with her phone.

Prosecutors say Reyes later emailed the image from her LAPD email address to her personal email address.

Reyes and Lopez were roommates at the time, and phone records showed that they made multiple phone calls to Fox Television and TMZ in February.

The photo shocked fans and prompted a national conversation about domestic violence after it spread through the media.

But despite a search of Reyes' and Lopez's bank accounts, a money trail was not discovered tying the leak to them, prosecutors said.

In order to prove the officers broke the law, prosecutors said in the report they "must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Reyes and Lopez disclosed the image of Robyn F. (Rihanna) to TMZ and obtained money in exchange for this disclosure."

The prosecutors' report noted that other LAPD personnel had access to the photos.

"As such, although both Reyes and Lopez's actions are suspicious, they are insufficient to support a criminal prosecution," the report says.

Rihanna's attorney Donald Etra said Thursday he does not know at this time whether the singer wants to pursue any further legal action.

"Apparently this was an internal decision by the district attorney. A victim's privacy should be protected," Etra said.

Oldest pottery comes from Chinese cave

Ice age foragers cooked with ceramic pots long before farmers did

Web edition : 2:02 pm

Pottery making got off to an ancient, icy start in East Asia. Pieces of ceramic containers found in a Chinese cave date to between 19,000 and 20,000 years ago, making these finds from the peak of the last ice age the oldest known examples of pottery.

This new discovery suggests that hunter-gatherers in East Asia used pottery for cooking at least 10,000 years before farming appeared in that part of the world, say archaeologist Xiaohong Wu of Peking University in Beijing, China, and her colleagues. Cooking would have increased energy obtained from starchy foods and meat, a big plus in frigid areas with limited food opportunities, the researchers report in the June 29 Science.

?The early onset of pottery making meant that food preparation intensified during the last glacial maximum,? says Harvard University archaeologist and study coauthor Ofer Bar-Yosef.

Wu, Bar-Yosef and colleagues gathered 45 samples of bone and charcoal from previously excavated soil layers at Xianrendong Cave. Radiocarbon measurements of bone and charcoal generated by three labs ? one in China and two in the United States ? point to initial human use of the cave from about 29,000 to 17,500 years ago. Xianrendong Cave pottery contains burn marks from being placed over fires and is 2,000 to 3,000 years older than pottery from another Chinese cave, which had previously held the age record.

Until about a decade ago, scientists assumed that heating clay to make ceramic containers began about 10,000 years ago with the rise of farming (SN: 2/5/05, p. 88).

?Chinese pottery appeared long before animal domestication and has no obvious connection to the origins of agriculture or sedentary living,? remarks archaeologist T. Douglas Price of the University of Wisconsin ? Madison.

East Asian hunter-gatherers may have set up seasonal camps 20,000 years ago, where they made pottery, proposes archaeologist Zhijun Zhao of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. ?Xianrendong pottery probably had many purposes, including boiling clams and snails,? says Zhao, who participated in a 1993 excavation of the cave.

Numerous clam and snail shells were unearthed in pottery-bearing soil at Xianrendong Cave and at other ancient Chinese sites, Zhao says.

Ice age people could also have used pottery to boil bones for grease and marrow and to brew alcoholic drinks, the Chinese researcher suggests.

Discovering 20,000-year-old pottery in China doesn?t mean that people outside East Asia at that time didn?t know about ceramic techniques, comments archaeologist Anna Belfer-Cohen of Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. East Europeans baked clay figurines 23,000 years ago, and Middle Easterners made simple pottery between 14,500 and 11,500 years ago, Belfer-Cohen points out.

?The concept of pottery making was introduced in different parts of the world at different times,? she says.

Acer launches 116inch Sandy Bridge TravelMate B113

4GB of RAM, half a TB of storage, Sandy Bridge and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 panel starting at €450 (about $563), sounds like a pretty sweet deal on a last-gen ultrabook right? Well, Acer's TravelMate B1113 is actually brand new and, as you dig a little deeper into the specs, this one sounds more like a rather hefty netbook. And we do mean hefty -- this laptop apparently tips the scales at 1.88 Kg, which puts it a touch over the four pound mark. 4.1 pounds certainly isn't shoulder busting, but it's a solid half a pound more than you'd expect from a machine of this size. Then there's the fact that the base model ships with a 1.4Ghz Celeron, and the top shelf €560 version (roughly $700) only sports a 1.5GHz Core i3. We haven't been able to dig up the dimensions on this sucker, but the press pics don't make it look particularly bulky. We can only assume, given its considerable weight and diminutive size, that the chassis is made of cast iron. On the plus side, it does have a matte screen... that's gotta count for something, right?

This study has been published in the European Journal of Public Health

A new study confirms that doing short journeys on foot rather than taking the car or motorbike would avoid the death of 108 men and 79 women a year in Catalonia alone. This would imply annual savings of more than 200 million euros.

Researchers from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB), headed by Catherine Prez from the Healthcare Information Systems Service, have estimated the yearly economic benefits from a reduction in death rates by substituting at least one short vehicle journey for a walk.

The authors conducted a cross-sectional study based on Catalonia's Mobility Survey performed by the Generalitat and the Metropolitan Transport Agency in 2006 which documents the journeys of more than one hundred thousand people.

Then, 80,552 individuals over 17 years of age who did at least one journey were selected and researchers calculated the number of men and women who did not meet daily physical exercise recommendations but travelled by car or motorbike for journeys up to five minutes long.

In order to calculate the annual economic benefits, the 'Health Economic Evaluation Tool (HEAT)' was used. It was designed by the WHO and estimates the benefits of reduced mortality by increasing physical exercise.

For their economic estimations, as set out by HEAT, the researchers took in account certain parameters: 150 minutes walked each week, a relative risk of 0.78 for all deaths linked to walking half an hour a day, a mortality rate in Spain of 21,349 deaths per 100,000 people between the ages of 20 and 49 years and a statistical value of a person's life of 1,300,000 according to the "willingness to pay" methodology.

This study has been published in the European Journal of Public Health and its results reveal that 77.2% of men and 67.7% of women in Catalonia do not reach recommended daily amounts of physical exercise when walking.

"However, 15.6% and 13.9% respectively would reach recommendations if they were to substitute at least one short, 5 minute vehicle journey," as explained to SINC by Marta Olabarria, lead author of the study.

When applied to the population of Catalonia, this would mean that 326,557 men and 252,509 women would meet recommendations. According to the estimations made using HEAT, this new form of physical activity would avoid 108.4 deaths in men and 79.2 in women. In turn, this would bring about savings of 124,216,000 and 84,927,000 respectively.

Walking is a sport

Through the Global Strategy on Diet Physical Activity and Health, the WHO states that it is necessary to do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week. Walking to get around is considered a moderate physical activity and is perfect to meet exercise recommendations.

Canadian Medical Association Journal

A new report from the province of Quebec that recommends medical assistance to die will reignite the debate over euthanasia in Canada, states an editorial published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

The Dying with Dignity commission of the Quebec National Assembly recently issued its report after two years of public and expert consultation and research.

Advocates of this approach argue that medically assisted death is a patient's right. It should therefore be considered as an end-of-life care option rather than a criminal act.

"Many physicians and patients will find this a shocking prospect to consider," write Drs. Ken Flegel, Senior Associate Editor, CMAJ, and John Fletcher, CMAJ Editor-in-Chief. "Frail, dependent patients often feel a burden to their families or caregivers, and the unspoken possibility of a quick resolution to their predicament may complicate an already stressful situation," they write.

If Quebec decides to adopt the recommendations, legal safeguards must be built in to protect health care workers and patients from potential abuses once the changes are made. Public consultation in Quebec as well as national discussion and involvement of federal lawmakers are needed if changes are to be made to the criminal code.

"The ethics of euthanasia are a familiar debate in Canada; one that may have been theoretical, until recently, because of the tacit assumption that doctors do not kill people. In Quebec, the debate is moving from theory toward practice. Which way will legislation go? Will the rest of Canada follow? Those who care about the answers to these questions must speak up now, and with conviction," conclude the authors.

The Imperial President of Arizona

In 2010, Arizona enacted a law, SB 1070, that required state police officers to check the immigration status of a person whom they stop, detain, or arrest?and to arrest anyone who has committed a crime that means he can be deported under federal law. The Arizona law also made two other federal immigration violations crimes under state law. The court struck down all but the first of these provisions?leaving in place only the status checking part?essentially on the grounds that the rest of Arizona?s plans conflicted with the federal scheme for regulating immigration. Under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, state law that conflicts with federal law is invalid.

Great Ideas To Think About Before Your Next Commercial Real ...

When investing in commercial real estate, go bigger. If you are considering buying a five-unit building, remember that managing 50 units is just as easy as handling five. You need commercial financing regardless of the number of units, and larger buildings will be cheaper per unit.

Look into any potential environmental problems before you buy. A large concern is when you currently own a property that has issues with hazardous waste. Once you own the property, any problems, hazardous waste related or otherwise, are yours to deal with.

You will probably have to put a lot of effort into your new investment at the beginning. You have to look around for the right chance, and you might need to do some improvements on the property once you purchase it. Don?t abandon you commercial real estate venture because it currently consumes so much of your time. It will pay off in the long run.

It is important to know how to deal with emergency maintenance. The landlord in the building where you have your office will be able to provide emergency repair contact information for you. Have their phone number handy and know how long it will take them to arrive in an emergency. Consider how an emergency will affect your business operations, and have an emergency operating plan in place.

When looking for commercial real estate properties to house your business, keep in mind that size is among the biggest factors. To avoid the need to move in the future, invest in a piece of commercial property that allows for ample growth.

Buying a larger property is great for a variety of reasons. For example, with more units you?ll be able to charge a smaller profit on each and ensure they fill up quickly, and yet reap great rewards. A lot of people who invest in real estate do not even give consideration to properties that contain fewer than ten units. It is generally accepted that a higher number of units correlates to higher profits.

Try feng shui in your home office as well as commercial real estate buildings. De-cluttering and open spaces are two key tenets, both of which are attractive to buyers.

Ensure that you have a singular investment focus at any given time. You will get better results if you stick to a single type of investment rather than doing land leasing, apartments, and offices all at once. Each of these investments will need to be closely monitored and given your full attention. It is a lot better to master one type of investment that to be mediocre with many.

One counterintuitive fact about the apartment market is that many experts recommend avoiding properties with fewer than ten units, as they are actually more of a pain to deal with than large complexes. However, every situation is unique. Do your research, and make an educated decision.

Be cautious of signing standard lease forms when leasing commercial real estate. It is not uncommon for real estate brokers to include detailed, confusing terms and clauses into the lease. By carefully perusing the document, you?ll avoid potential headaches and heartaches that a commercial lease sometimes produces.

Commercial transactions are significantly more time-consuming, complex and involved than the home-buying process. However, all of this is required because it facilitates higher returns on your investments.

When you are a new investor, it is best to focus on one type of investment at a time. Begin by selecting which type of commercial buildings you would most like to purchase and then devote all of your time to those types of properties. It is preferred to excel in one type instead of being mediocre in many types.

Use a digital camera to take pictures. Try to make sure that your pictures shows the defects.

Make sure you know what kind of environment your property is located. The one who?ll have to clean up any environmental waste on your property is you. Is the property you?re considering purchasing located in a flood zone? That is a decision you need to think long and hard about. As part of your decision to purchase a commercial real estate property, you should make inquiries at environmental assessment agencies in order to find out if there are any risks you should be aware of about the property and its surrounding area.

Be sure to have your property inspected by a licensed inspector prior to placing it up for sale. Fix all problems that they find as soon as possible.

Commercial property investors need to be conscious of drastic inflation in upcoming years. Investors in the past were protected by a clause that was built into any agreement that adjusted for inflation using Consumer Price Index comparisons. Today, this practice is all but extinct, leaving you more vulnerable to losses caused by inflation.

Do not hire a broker without finding out more about their past experience within commercial property. Choose one that specializes in your area of interest. You should be sure to enter into an exclusive agreement with that broker.

You must know what a good deal is, recognize it, and then be able to take advantage of it. Seasoned investors can spot a good deal quickly. Investors know when it is time to pass on a deal and use a pre-planned exit strategy when a bad deal calls for it. They also have an eye for repairs, are good at calculating risk, and they are good at knowing when their financial goals align with the properties in question.

By now, you should feel comfortable with the fundamentals of business real estate. Make sure you are flexible so that you can always be informed and know what to do in any type of situation. With this approach, you will be able to identify hidden opportunities, and make some very profitable deals.

Is Banner Advertising Better Than PPC? | Internet Contents

Banner advertising was around long before Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising, and it?s no big news that PPC is the new dominant advertising tool for many businesses. After all, PPC is laser focused and very direct in working to draw a very specific customer type to your site.

Banner advertising has been described by some as being akin to the dodo bird. In essence the feeling among some is that this kind of advertising is nearing a point of extinction and may be remembered with warm fuzzies, but may not be missed.

However, a quick trip into the depths of cyber space and you will find all kinds of banner ads, and major corporations develop and use them.

Do they know something you don?t?

I think what some of these corporations do know is that banner advertising can move beyond simple static graphics. In essence many banner ads today are being developed to include bold interaction that may appear as a game or perhaps as a mini movie.

These banner ads serve a unique niche for the visually oriented consumer.

The use of banner advertising may be used when the advertising business has a fairly clear understanding of the benefit of advertising on a specific site or sites. For instance if a site draws thousands of visitors a day and your product or service fits the demographic of the site then using banner ads that can help the visitor visualize something more then PPC text has the ability to facilitate a better Return on Investment (ROI).

If PPC is the ?everyman? advertising method then the new generation of banner ads is for the expert advertiser. Banner ads can help you motivate potential customers to visit your site from the confines of a site they trust and a site you value for their ability to generate traffic to your site.

Banner advertising is also good for an industry specific website. If there is a site that is in concert with your business goals and directives it might make sense to look into using banner advertising on their site.

While banner advertising is not as laser focused as PPC it can be a significant help if you are willing to do your own research to see what sites may best benefit your business.

There are still banner exchange programs, but they are often meaningless in that they may send some customers to your site, but they aren?t targeted and the individuals may not be especially motivated beyond initial curiosity. Besides you may be required to place banner advertising on your site that doesn?t really fit with your demographic (or potentially objectionable) just to participate in the banner link exchange.

There is also the question of banner ad development. Unless you are especially skilled in graphic design you may need to outsource the banner ad development from a third party.

You may be able to access a low-cost or no-cost banner ad through a site like http://www.logobogo.com, but a banner ad will need to be created in either a visually static display or a flash designed banner with very specific dimensions.

So, to recap ? the banner advertising of today requires a greater sense of business research to find the best fit for your advertising dollar and banner development is something you will need to develop as you begin to look into what possibilities exist in this refreshed advertising medium.
