WATFORD, England (AP) ? Hogwarts Castle is ready to welcome the Muggle multitudes.
Here, on a film studio sound stage near London, stands the real Hogwarts ? or at least a monumental model of the fictional wizarding school, the very one used in the eight "Harry Potter" movies.
The minutely detailed castle now forms the climax of "The Making of Harry Potter," a behind-the-scenes studio tour based at the Warner Bros.' facility where the films were made between 2000 and 2010.
It may only be a model, but for Potter fans it's already a place of pilgrimage.
"I had to literally stand there for 10 minutes and just absorb it," said Cee Anatole, who works for a fan website and had a preview ahead of Saturday's grand opening. "The attention to detail ? it was just amazing."
Warner Bros. hopes the general public will be equally enthusiastic. The studio expects 5,000 people a day to visit the attraction, which is selling itself on its authenticity ? it features real sets, models, props and costumes from the films, on the original studio site.
The first, and most spectacular, set visitors encounter is the Great Hall of Hogwarts school, complete with stone floor, Gothic arches, gargoyles and huge fireplace. Later come the dormitory where the young wizard slept, the office of headmaster Albus Dumbledore, the giant Hagrid's Hut and Diagon Alley, the magical shopping street that's home to Ollivander's wand shop and Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.
The tour is an almost overwhelming feast of detail. Displays range from Mrs. Weasley's self-knitting sweater to boxes of Cheery Owls cereal, potions bottles filled with plastic newts and real animal bones and 17,000 individually painted wand boxes.
It's nirvana for Potter fans ? and for film geeks, who can watch designers talk about their work in short films, ride a broomstick in the green-screen effects room and see how makeup, prosthetics and animatronics brought hundreds of magical creatures to life.
The goal is to pay tribute to the hundreds of unsung technicians and craftspeople who reinvented author J.K. Rowling's magical universe for the big screen.
"There's so much work that you couldn't see, so much work that just became part of the film," said David Heyman, a producer on all the Potter films.
"This is a tour for Harry Potter fans, but it's also a tour for people who are not necessarily Harry Potter fans," he said. "It's such a good insight into the making of a film ... basically a how-to."
Warner Bros. is clearly proud of its new attraction. One of the creators' few regrets is that trains to Watford, which will carry many of the site's visitors, leave from London's Euston station, rather than nearby King's Cross, whose imaginary platform 9 3/4 was the terminus of the Hogwarts Express. Rearranging the railways is beyond even Harry Potter's powers.
The attraction is part of Warner Bros.' 100 million pound ($160 million) redevelopment of Leavesden Studios, a former World War II airdrome 20 miles (30 kilometers) northwest of London, into Europe's largest filmmaking complex.
In addition to the tour, the working studio due to open later this year will have sound stages, workshops, offices and the biggest backlot in Europe, and make Warner Bros.' the only U.S. studio with a permanent base in Britain.
Those who worked on the film say the transformation is remarkable.
"What is different and strange is that the roof is not leaking," said David Yates, who directed the final four Potter films. "And it's not dusty, it's not drafty and it's not cold. We literally were working in big sheds."
Warner Bros. is not estimating the lifespan of the attraction, which employs about 300 people, including a horde of Potter fans working as enthusiastic tour guides. But it says Pottermania shows no signs of waning.
Initial reviews have been largely positive, though some have questioned the admission price ? 28 pounds ($45) for adults and 21 pounds ($34) for children five and over. Children under 5 go free. Warner Bros. says the charges are "in line with other major attractions in the U.K. and around the world."
The attraction has already won over an important group of fans: the cast.
"I found it quite moving, actually, coming back," said Rupert Grint, who played Harry's best friend, Ron Weasley. "I sometimes had to remind myself that we weren't doing a scene, because it's so authentic.
"This is a special place for me. I basically grew up here, went to school here. It's just nice to be able to share it with everyone."

Star Trek-like open-source tricorder sees magnetic fields

Know the near-magical handheld analysis gadgets known as "tricorders" that everyone carries in Star Trek? A cognitive science researcher has created a real-world version.
"The open source science tricorders that I've developed are very much a way to help people explore and feed their curiosity for the world,"?Peter Jansen, who created and built the gadget, told me today in an email.
Jansen recently earned his Ph.D. in in cognitive science from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada where he taught computers to learn language like babies do. He is currently at the University of Arizona working on high-tech sensors.
A person with that level of smarts, apparently, has enough brain power leftover in his spare time to invent tricorders, not to mention the greedlessness to share the blueprint with DIYers who want their own. Instructions are available from his Tricorder Project website.
Like the Trek devices, Jansen?s gadgets will measure the environment, things such as ambient temperature, humidity and magnetic fields, as well as take spatial readings for distance, location and even motion. They?won?t, however, identify aliens for you.
The idea is to "help kids learn science at a conceptual level and ground abstract concepts like magnetism or polarization by providing a way to intuitively visualize them long before kids learn their mathematical formalisms," he said. (That's the uber-academic term referring to the logic and structure of math.)
Jansen shows off the devices in the video below.
?My hope is that someday every household and every kid who wants one will have access to this device that they can keep close in a pocket or bag and really pull out when curiosity strikes,? he says in the video.
While Jansen's tricorder is intended to help people visualize invisible aspects of the natural world such as magnetism, he said he is "very interested" in working on a medical tricorder that would qualify for the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize, a $10 million contest to develop a wireless, handheld device that monitors and diagnoses health conditions.
"Developing a medical tricorder has the opportunity to positively change so many lives," he said. "And I'd love the chance to work on it if the opportunity presented itself -- say through a grant or joining a team."

MADISON An independent commission of scientific leaders from 13 countries today released a detailed set of recommendations to policymakers on how to achieve food security in the face of climate change.
In their report, the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change proposes specific policy responses to the global challenge of feeding a world confronted by climate change, population growth, poverty, food price spikes and degraded ecosystems. The report highlights specific opportunities under the mandates of the Rio+20 Earth Summit, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Group of 20 (G20) nations.
"Food insecurity and climate change are already inhibiting human well-being and economic growth throughout the world and these problems are poised to accelerate," said Sir John Beddington, chair of the commission. "Decisive policy action is required if we are to preserve the planet's capacity to produce adequate food in the future."
The report was released today at the Planet Under Pressure conference where scientists from around the world are honing solutions for global sustainability challenges targeted to the Rio Summit to be held June 20-22 in Brazil.
The commission was created in 2011 and charged with identifying the best research-based approaches toward global food security in the face of climate change. The new report, available at http://bit.ly/ClimateFoodCommissionFinal, outlines seven recommendations they hope to see implemented concurrently by a constellation of governments, international institutions, investors, agricultural producers, consumers, food companies and researchers. They call for changes in policy, finance, agriculture, development aid, diet choices, and food waste as well as revitalized investment in the knowledge systems to support these changes.
"It's past time to realize that farms of every size all over the world are fundamental to providing for human nutritional demands and economic well-being, but they also face critical choices with significant implications for the way we manage the planet for long-term sufficiency," says U.S. Commissioner Molly Jahn, a professor at the University of WisconsinMadison.
Further, changes in agricultural practices have the potential to deliver benefits for both adaptation and mitigation of climate change. For example, in China, nearly 400 kilograms of chemical fertilizer are used on every hectare of farmland and, in Mexico, agriculture accounts for 77 percent of domestic water use, in part due to substantial subsidies for water and electricity used for irrigation.
Such practices offer both challenges and opportunities to refocus policies and budgets, say Jahn and the other commissioners, and they have urged the UNFCCC to establish a work program that addresses these issues together under the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice.
In addition to tackling agriculture, the commission's recommendations explicitly recognize the "demand side" of food insecurity, calling for policies and programs to support healthy and sustainable eating as well as those explicitly designed to empower vulnerable populations.
In particular, they underscore the need for improved data and decision support for land managers and policy makers. "The elements of the food system soil, water, climate, energy, people are intimately connected and it is critical that we understand how they work together as a system, and get that information into the hands of those who need it most," Jahn says.
The commission's report presents a stark picture of the challenges ahead and calls for decisive action on a global scale to ensure a "safe operating space" [link http://bit.ly/SafeSpaceClimateFood] for current and future generations.
"Many public and private sector leaders are already taking steps to overcome technical, social, financial and political barriers to a sustainable food system," says Bruce Campbell, director of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security, which convened the commission in February 2011. "The commission's work spells out who needs to do what to take these early efforts to the next level."
The commission is financially supported by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development. The commission brings together senior natural and social scientists working in agriculture, climate, food and nutrition, economics, and natural resources from Australia, Brazil, Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, France, Kenya, India, Mexico, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam. In addition, a two-day American Indian Business Trade Fair featured more than 400 exhibitors. The Trade Fair provided opportunities for American Indian suppliers to market their businesses, network and negotiate potential contracts with corporate and government buyers.
The Board utilized the Trade Fair to promote Seminole/Stiles Construction & Development.
Last year, the Board approved the partnership with the intention of expanding its operations in the construction industry.
With 61 years of experience in the field, Stiles offered the resources and contacts the Tribe needed to expand its business off Seminole reservations and increase its market share.
Based in Fort Lauderdale, Stiles Construction is a branch of Stiles Corp., which is recognized for developing more than 37 million square feet of projects throughout Florida, including office, industrial, retail, mixed-use and residential projects.
The company plays a major role in each part of a project from design to development to construction. Their past projects include the construction of the Dolphin Stadium?s $200-million expansion and the Trump International Hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach.
David Lowery, director of Public Projects for Stiles Construction, said the joint venture will allow Seminole/Stiles to secure federal set-aside contracting work.
The set-asides were created to help small and disadvantaged businesses compete in the marketplace and gain access to federal and private procurement markets, according to the U.S. Small Business Association?s website.
Director Juan Menendez said the venture will not compete with existing Tribal construction businesses.?
Instead, he said, Seminole/Stiles will utilize Tribal labor for its projects.
The joint venture was a clear choice for the Board; because the Tribe owns 51 percent of Seminole/Stiles and Stiles Construction incurs all liabilities, it can only turn a profit for the Seminole Tribe.
?This is just the beginning for the Tribe,? Lowery said. ?This venture will give them a bright future for years to come.?
President Tony Sanchez Jr. said the Board used RES to lay down the foundation for Seminole/Stiles and start networking in an effort to spread the word about the venture. The next step will be following up with those connections to secure future projects.
?We?re looking to do things beyond reservation boundaries,? President Sanchez said. ?I am very proud of the joint venture that we have. This administration has hit the ground running, and we?re going to keep burning the midnight oil.?
To further expand its operations outside of the gaming industry, President Sanchez said the Board will utilize the Tribe?s reputation to capitalize on other ventures as well.
?Every venture will have to be evaluated; every partnership will be looked at, but there?s nothing off limits,? President Sanchez said.
The Board has already expanded its citrus business to include shipments of its Seminole Pride Orange Juice to Santiago, Chile and hopes that will create other opportunities in Latin America. The Board has similar goals for its beef business, which currently ships to Korea, Japan and the European Union, as well as within the U.S. The Tribe has also pursued a wine partnership with Cuillo Wines, which supplies wines for Morton?s The Steakhouse and Lufthansa airlines.
A recent partnership with Mobile Mike ? a local radio personality with Clear Channel Communications Inc. ? is helping promote the Board?s endeavors through radio advertising, marketing and even vehicle wraps.
The ultimate goal of these partnerships, President Sanchez said, is for Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc. to put money in Tribal members? pockets and to help the Board operate on its own two feet.
In the midst of growth and expansion, the Board also recognizes the need to be intentional in its decisions.
Big Cypress Board Rep. Joe Frank said the current economic climate calls for more efficiency. Therefore, the Board has made every effort to streamline operations while maintaining transparency; they hold frequent community meetings to keep Tribal members informed and involved every step of the way.
After all, ?that?s who we?re working for,? Rep. Frank said.
The Board hopes not only to have successful business operations but to also pave the way for future administrations, said Hollywood Board Rep. Chris Osceola.

Does the brain 'remember' antidepressants? More proof for the power of placebo
ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) often undergo multiple courses of antidepressant treatment during their lives. This is because the disorder can recur despite treatment and because finding the right medication for a specific individual can take time.
While the relationship between prior treatment and the brain's response to subsequent treatment is unknown, a new study by UCLA researchers suggests that how the brain responds to antidepressant medication may be influenced by its remembering of past antidepressant exposure.
Interestingly, the researchers used a harmless placebo as the key to tracking the footprints of prior antidepressant use.
Aimee Hunter, the study's lead author and an assistant professor of psychiatry at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, and colleagues showed that a simple placebo pill, made to look like actual medication for depression, can "trick" the brain into responding in the same manner as the actual medication.
The report was published online March 23 in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology.
The investigators examined changes in brain function in 89 depressed persons during eight weeks of treatment, using either an antidepressant medication or a similar-looking placebo pill. They set out to compare the two treatments -- medication versus placebo -- but they also added a twist: They separately examined the data for subjects who had never previously taken an antidepressant and those who had.
The researchers focused on the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain thought to be involved in planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision-making and moderating social behavior, all things depressed people wrestle with.
Brain changes were assessed using electroencephalograph (EEG) measures developed at UCLA by study co-authors Dr. Ian Cook, UCLA's Miller Family Professor of Psychiatry, and Dr. Andrew Leuchter, a professor of psychiatry and director of the Laboratory of Brain, Behavior and Pharmacology at UCLA's Semel Institute. The EEG measure, recorded from scalp electrodes, is linked to blood flow in the cerebral cortex, which suggests the level of brain activity.
The antidepressant medication given during the study appeared to produce slight decreases in prefrontal brain activity, regardless of whether subjects had received prior antidepressant treatment during their lifetime or not. (A decrease in brain activity is not necessarily a bad thing, the researchers note; with depression, too much activity in the brain can be as bad as too little.)
However, the researchers observed striking differences in the power of placebo, depending on subjects' prior antidepressant use. Subjects who had never been treated with an antidepressant exhibited large increases in prefrontal brain activity during placebo treatment. But those who had used antidepressant medication in the past showed slight decreases in prefrontal activity -- brain changes that were indistinguishable from those produced by the actual drug.
"The brain's response to the placebo pill seems to depend on what happened previously -- on whether or not the brain has ever 'seen' antidepressant medication before," said Hunter, who is a member of the placebo research team at the Laboratory of Brain, Behavior and Pharmacology. "If it has seen it before, then the brain's signature 'antidepressant-exposure' response shows up."
According to Hunter, the effect looks conspicuously like a classical conditioning phenomenon, wherein prior exposure to the actual drug may have produced the specific prefrontal brain response and subsequent exposure to the cues surrounding drug administration -- the relationship with the doctor or nurse, the medical treatment setting, the act of taking a prescribed pill and so forth -- came to elicit a similar brain response through 'conditioning' or 'associative learning.'
While medication can have a powerful effect on our physiology, said Hunter, "the behaviors and cues in the environment that are associated with taking medication can come to elicit their own effects. One's personal treatment history is one of the many factors that influence the overall effects of treatment."
Still, she noted, there are other possible explanations, and further research is needed to tease out changes in brain function that are related to antidepressant exposure, compared with brain changes that are related to clinical improvement during treatment.
Funding for the study was provided by the National Institute of Mental Health, Eli Lilly and Company, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, and Aspect Medical Systems; these funders had no further role in the study. Hunter received financial support from Covidien.

ZURICH (AP) -FIFA is extending research into cardiac arrest cases involving footballers to learn about the condition which caused Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba to collapse during a match.
FIFA's chief medical officer, Jiri Dvorak, said Monday that the project will be advanced at FIFA's medical conference scheduled for May 23-24 in Budapest, Hungary.
"We have invited all national-team doctors to establish a worldwide database for cases of sudden cardiac arrest," Dvorak told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "This will lead to analysis of the risk factors."
Muamba's condition is serious but stable in a London hospital, nine days after he collapsed during the first half of an FA Cup match at Tottenham's White Hart Lane stadium.
The 23-year-old Muamba's recovery has been followed avidly across the world, but Dvorak hopes FIFA's new project will provide medical researchers with important information about lower-profile cases.
"Sometimes we only get (details of) individual cases through the media. When we get the files we can analyze them," he said.
The FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Center (F-MARC) also helped complete a recent study of electrocardiogram (ECG) testing in African players. Muamba was born in Zaire.
Dvorak said the study of 230 healthy players in Gabon was needed because most data from ECG testing, which looks for electric faults of the heart, is related to people of Caucasian ethnicity.
The variation in data from players of different ethnic backgrounds was discussed at the inaugural FIFA medical conference held October 2009 in Zurich.
FIFA also contributed to a summit of cardiologists in Seattle last month, which was hosted by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
The two-day session focused on how to better interpret readings of ECGs performed on athletes, Dvorak said.
"Cardiologists are constantly learning," the Swiss professor said. "We are also developing a comprehensive e-learning course available to team physicians."
Dvorak pointed to the 2003 death of Marc-Vivien Foe, who collapsed while playing for Cameroon against Colombia in a Confederations Cup match in France as a turning point in football's awareness of potential heart problems.
"It was the imperative wake-up call that we have to deal with this situation and do everything to mitigate the risk factor," he said.
FIFA began insisting on cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory tests for all World Cup players before the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Mandatory testing was introduced ahead of the 2007 Women's World Cup, and now applies to all FIFA age-group tournaments for men and women.
Dvorak said a defibrillator, which was used on Muamba as he lay on the field, is required at all FIFA-sanctioned matches and should be available at all World Cup qualifying matches.
Each of FIFA's 208 national members receives funding for medical projects as part of its $250,000 annual FIFA grant, Dvorak said.
FIFA's medical adviser said he had spoken with Bolton officials throughout Muamba's ordeal.
"From the very first moment, we are in contact," Dvorak said. "We wish him all the best, and it's fantastic that he is recovering."
