College football odds: No. 23 Texas at Kansas

The only thing the Texas Longhorns are playing for at this point is the best bowl possible. Certainly an upset loss at Kansas on Saturday would downgrade UT in the eyes of the major bowls. Texas is a 21-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.

Texas bounced back from a blowout loss to Oklahoma with a 56-50 win over Baylor last week. Joe Bergeron ran for five touchdowns, falling one touchdown short of the school record by Heisman Trophy-winning running back Ricky Williams. David Ash passed for 274 yards for Texas (5-2, 2-2 Big 12), which overcame another dismal effort by its defense.

Texas led 42-31 at halftime and the game was on pace to beat the Big 12 record total of 133 points when Baylor lost 70-63 to West Virginia on Sept. 29. Texas has allowed 1,065 rushing yards in its past four games, including 255 to Baylor on Saturday. That?s stunning for a team that was supposed to rely on its defense.

Kansas (1-6, 0-4) is terrible again this season despite hiring Charlie Weis as head coach. Last week, KU lost its sixth straight game, 52-7 at Oklahoma. James Sims ran for 102 yards and a shutout-preventing touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Kansas, which lost its 16th straight conference game and 27th out of the last 28.

Kansas went with Michael Cummings as its starting quarterback, after he?d been at the helm as the Jayhawks rallied for 14 straight points and had the ball with a chance to go ahead in the fourth quarter of a 20-14 loss to Oklahoma State the previous week. He and Dayne Crist, who?d been the starter the rest of the season, were equally ineffective. Cummings went 10 for 21 for 111 yards with two interceptions. Crist was 3 of 6 for 13 yards and fumbled away an early opportunity for the Jayhawks to keep it interesting.

Texas and Kansas are meeting for the 12th time in a series that dates back to 1901. The Longhorns lead the series 9-2 with the only losses coming in 1901 and 1938 in Lawrence. The Horns have won all nine matchups in Big 12 play. Six of the 11 games have been played in Lawrence with Texas holding a 4-2 edge in those contests. The Horns hold a 5-0 advantage in Austin. During the Horns current nine-game winning streak, Texas has outscored Kansas by an average of 46.6-14.5.

WagerWeb.com trends: Longhorns are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings. Favorite is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings. Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
