Morehouse Hosts Annual Breast Cancer Walk | The Maroon Tiger

Each year, a couple hundred students, faculty and staff gather in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel to walk for a significant cause, breast cancer. On Saturday, Sept. 17, Morehouse College hosted its 12th annual breast cancer walk.

The event is organized each year by the hard work of Sandra Walker and Mary Peaks, 12-year and 14-year cancer survivors, respectively.

In attendance was representation from various student groups including the Bonner and Adams Scholars, the Morehouse College Glee Club, the Health Careers Society and the ROTC.

President and First Lady, Robert and Cheryl Franklin, gave words of encouragement and led the way holding the breast cancer awareness banner.

?Cancer is a force,? President Franklin told the gathering crowd. ?It can bring you down.?

President Franklin continued imploring the crowd to ?know your enemy? through early detection of cancer of all types.

First Lady Franklin followed by giving more reason to why it is important to advocate for cancer awareness through a walk rather than a simple media campaign.

?We?re beginning to learn more and more about the importance of nutrition and healthy physical bodies,? the First Lady said.

Over the past few years, the walk has also served to honor the memory of Chandra Price, a Campus Operations employee who lost her battle with cancer at the young age of 30.

Through the annual breast cancer walk, Morehouse has raised approximately $181,000 since the walk began.

?With faith, hope and love, we can overcome this,? Franklin said. ?And as we know from Martin Luther King Jr., love is a greater force than hate, than illness, than cancer.?
